SUMMARY:Art Exhibition featuring Roger Leonard
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Rio Carrabelle is excited to be presenting a remarkable art exhibition featuring the art of Roger Leonard in the historic art venue\, Rio Carrabelle in Carrabelle\, Florida. Roger’s exhibit\, primarily marine landscapes\, is realistic\, moody and stunning. This impressive exhibition is on display now and will run through February. \nRoger Leonard graduated from Ringling School of Art in Sarasota\, Florida in 1974 and has won numerous awards. He worked in commercial art for over 20 years making advertising art and illustrations as well as creating many portraits and murals. After 20 years of commercial art\, Roger turned to fine art and sought the freedom of painting only for himself. “Art for me is strictly my need to do it. I need to capture the time\, place\, feeling of being there\, of knowing my subjects intimately. I work hard and try to make it work visually. What it means\, I don’t know and I don’t care. The joy for me is the creating and the painting\, then watching and listening to those who enjoy it also. When I hear people’s comments like\, “I know that place – I can feel the heat – I can smell the rain\, the sea – I’d really like to walk there – That looks like what I feel\,” then I know they sense what I saw.” says Roger Leonard. \nRoger lived and worked in a studio/home on Dog Island for 15 years\, in a rural and isolated environment that inspired him. He now divides his time between Dog Island and his home and studio on River Road in Carrabelle. His professional affiliations include the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society\, Signature Member; Oil Painters of America; American Society of Marine Artists; and American Impressionists Society\, Inc. \nRio Carrabelle Art Gallery is open Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10 am – 3 pm at 102 St. James Avenue (US Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, Florida. Rio Carrabelle is a unique non-profit art & music destination located in beautiful downtown Carrabelle. Visit riocarrabelle.com or on Facebook\, The Gallery At Rio Carrabelle\, for more information. \nThe Meet the Artist Reception has been postponed and is being rescheduled due to Hurricane Ian. Stay tuned for more information on the Meet the Artist Reception.

SUMMARY:New Exhibit on “Shipwrecks of Dog Island”
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is excited to announce the grand opening of a new exhibit on “Shipwrecks of Dog Island.” This Grand Opening Celebration will start on Wednesday\, October 12 at 12 noon and run through December 10 at 6 pm. The exhibit will then become a permanent installation. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. The museum and exhibit are open Wednesdays 12-5 pm\, Thursdays thru Saturdays 10 am – 5 pm and Sundays 12 – 5 pm. \nThis exhibit will explore Dog Island’s rich maritime history\, and especially focus on those shipwrecks that resulted from the Category 5 direct hit\, the “Carrabelle Hurricane” in 1899 through amazing photographs. Dog Island was a safe harbor for European explorers\, smugglers\, fishermen and lumbermen. In 2018\, Hurricane Michael uncovered parts of two ships that were wrecked during the 1899 event. Learn why these ships were visiting Carrabelle and which of our exports they took back to Europe. \nAn original video featuring expert underwater archaeologist Chuck Meide describes the process of identifying the sunken ships. It informs visitors about what to do when they come across an artifact on public land whether that’s a piece of a shipwreck\, an arrowhead\, or a piece of pottery. This exhibit was funded in part as a heritage education project by the Florida Department of State\, Division of Historic Preservation and the State of Florida. \nThis exhibit created by curator Joan Matey is the first to be installed in the museum’s refurbished upstairs. Please note that the upstairs currently can only be accessed by stairs and is therefore temporarily not accessible to those with mobility issues. An elevator has been funded through a grant and through dedicated fundraising efforts and will be installed by next summer. A special video program will also make it possible to learn about the Shipwrecks of Dog Island exhibit from downstairs to accommodate all visitors during this transition period. \nCarrabelle History Museum is located\, one block from Carrabelle Harbor\, at 106 SE Avenue B\, Carrabelle\, FL. Funding in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. For more information\, contact 850-697-2141 or go to www.carrabellehistorymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Guadalcanal Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on the Guadalcanal Campaign in the Pacific Theatre. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday\, October 4 until Saturday\, October 29. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Watchtower\, which was the campaign in the Solomon Islands\, including the effort to control Guadalcanal (Aug 1942- Feb 1943) was the first offensive campaign against the Japanese in WWII. By mid 1942 the Japanese empire controlled a vast area of the Pacific Ocean and planned a large airfield on Guadalcanal\, which would have presented a direct risk to the supply route between the US and the Eastern coast of Australia\, interfering with plans to use Australia as a staging point for operations against New Guinea and against the huge Japanese base at Rabaul in the New Britain Islands. The Guadalcanal Campaign\, in conjunction with the Battle of Midway (June 1942)\, is considered a turning point in the war and a key to eventual victory over the Japanese. Come learn more about this fascinating history at this special exhibit October 4-29 at Camp Gordon Johnston Museum. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:Postponed! Meet the Artist Reception with Roger Leonard
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED – The Gallery at Rio Carrabelle is sorry to announce that due to the inclement weather possible with Hurricane Ian\, the  Meet the Artist Reception with Roger Leonard has been POSTPONED. Quite a few guests were traveling a significant distance to attend. We will announce the rescheduled date as soon as possible. Thank you! \nThe exhibition will remain open as long as conditions are safe. Regular exhibition hours are expected to resume next week starting October 4th.   Tuesday-Saturday 10 – 3 pm. \n++++++++++++++++++++++++ \nThe Gallery at Rio Carrabelle is hosting a special Meet the Artist Reception with the remarkable painter\, Roger Leonard on Saturday\, October 1st from 6:00-9:00 pm in the historic and unique art venue\, Rio Carrabelle in Carrabelle\, Florida. Roger is a graduate of Ringling School of Fine Art in Sarasota\, Florida and has won numerous awards including several from the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. The reception\, in honor of an exhibition of Roger’s work currently on display in the Rio\, will feature music by the Rio Jazz Trio\, food and drink. Guests are warmly invited to see this exhibition and meet the artist himself. \nThis art exhibition\, of primarily marine landscapes\, has been described as contemplative and mesmerizing. Roger’s art reflects his love of the secret parts of Florida. In his paintings he explores places like Dog Island\, Indian Pass\, Tate’s Hell\, Dead Lakes as well as the Everglades. His attention to the details of these forgotten\, isolated places infuses the viewer with a feeling of solitude and mystery. Roger says\, “Art\, for me\, is strictly my need to do it! I need to capture the time\, the place\, and the feeling of being there\, of knowing my subject intimately and rendering it honestly\, completely. When I hear comments like: ‘I know that place … I can feel the heat\, hear the solitude. I can smell the sea\, and feel the rain.’ … Then I know they sense what I saw. And they know what my art is about.” \nRoger Leonard worked in commercial art for over 20 years in advertising\, commercial art\, design & illustration. Roger lived almost in seclusion on Dog Island for 15 years continually inspired by the rural and remote environment. During that time he developed his own distinctive vision. Currently a resident of Carrabelle\, FL\, he now divides his time between Dog Island and his Carrabelle home. His professional affiliations include the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society\, Signature Member; Oil Painters of America; American Society of Marine Artists; and American Impressionists Society\, Inc. \nThe Gallery at Rio Carrabelle is open Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10 am-3 pm at 102 St. James Avenue (US Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, Florida. Rio Carrabelle is a unique non-profit art & music destination located in beautiful Carrabelle. Visit riocarrabelle.com or on Facebook\, The Gallery At Rio Carrabelle\, for more information.
