SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring our African American Soldiers
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of Black History Month\, the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will present a special exhibit to honor our country’s African-American Servicemen. This exhibit will focus on the 473rd\, one of the Black Amphibious Truck Companies that served at Camp Gordon Johnston during World War II\, as well as go into more depth on the segregation and Jim Crow laws that our African-American service members faced. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, January 31\, 2023 and be on display until Saturday\, February 25. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. \nAfrican Americans served in large numbers during WWII in spite of being denied full rights as American citizens. African Americans served in segregated units in both the Army and the Army Air Corps\, one of the most recognizable being the Tuskegee Airmen. Many trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in transportation units like Amphibious Truck Companies\, and even these support units worked close to combat and under fire. The 473rd Amphibious Truck Company trained in the use of the amphibious truck known as the DUKW\, using the bay and sandy beaches in Carrabelle and all along the Forgotten Coast to practice operating\, loading and unloading these truly amphibious vehicles. The 473rd Amphibious Truck Company\, along with the 471st and 476th who also trained at Camp Gordon Johnston\, went on to be a part of a 21 unit force from the Army that deployed with the 4th and 5th Marines for the campaign on Iwo Jima. A recent find of a full roster of the 473rd is allowing us to research this company’s men. \nThis exhibit will present what has been discovered to date of these men\, who like many African Americans\, served their country with honor in a military that was still segregated and share the types of challenges that were faced by these heroes. The Camp Gordon Johnston Museum continues their campaign to find and preserve the individual stories of the African American men that trained at the Camp and the men and women from the Florida Panhandle that served in WWII. The hope is that the families and descendants of these soldiers may help the museum to learn more these heroes and their lives. Photos and personal stories of these men are always a much welcome addition. DESCRIPTION:Music and Art collaborate and combine to create an immersive\, cultural experience at Rio Carrabelle. Rio Carrabelle is a unique non-profit art and music destination located in the heart of Carrabelle. Throughout January and February stellar music performances will be held in this historic building while surrounded by the gorgeous paintings and art of some gifted\, local artists. \nOn Saturday\, January 21 at 7:30 pm\, the concert series will kick off with talented vocalist Avis Berry and a jazz quartet for Ballads & Bossa Nova. “Her smooth\, sweet and soulful voice is a pleasure to listen to\, and the pure joie de vivre she projects while singing is infectious…” according to Tallahassee Magazine. Avis Berry is the queen of vocalists in Tallahassee. She’s got the voice and the right attitude when she delivers a song. Rio is excited to have Avis returning to Carrabelle once again for what will be an outstanding performance. \nThe music series continues with the Brian Hall Trio bringing some fabulous Post Modern Jazz to Carrabelle on January 28. Then on Saturday\, February 11 will be composer and vocalist\, Darryl Tookes\, returning from NYC. And rounding out the concert series will be Hot Mess providing some cool Blues & Zydeco on Saturday\, February 25. \nWhile being immersed in the sounds of these talented musical artists\, guests will be surrounded by the works of a group of gifted visual artists. The striking paintings of Roger Leonard are featured along with works by wonderful artists Pat Moore\, Bill Owen\, Joe Kotzman\, and Bo May. This artwork is on display through the end of February adding to the mood throughout the music series. This stunning art can also be enjoyed every Tuesday thru Saturday\, from 10 am to 3 pm. \nAll musical performances will be enjoyed in an intimate Cabaret-style listening room and are BYOB. SUMMARY:The Battle of Natural Bridge: History Program
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting an interesting history program entitled\, “The Battle of Natural Bridge”. This program features historian and author\, Dale Cox and will be held Saturday\, January 21\, 2023\, at 10 am – 12 pm in the upstairs room at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St. James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. There is no charge for this event. \nThis program will explore the little known facts about the 1865 Union raid that culminated at the Battle of Natural Bridge\, the largest Civil War engagement in Florida’s Big Bend region and one of the last significant Confederate victories of the Civil War. Fought on March 6\, 1865\, along the St. Marks River\, the battle not only preserved Tallahassee’s status as the only unconquered Southern capital east of the Mississippi\, it protected a large area of North Florida and South Georgia from devastation at the hands of advancing Union troops. \nHistorian and author Dale Cox is the author of a book entitled\, “The Battle of Natural Bridge\, Florida: The Confederate Defense of Tallahassee”. Dale Cox is the author of more than one dozen books on Southern history and culture and has won numerous awards. \nThere is no fee for this program. Donations are gladly accepted to defray costs. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Nuremberg & War Crime Trials
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit for the month of January on the War Crime Trials of German military and government members\, of which the Nuremberg Trials are the most well known. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, January 3\, 2023 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, January 28. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. \nFrom November 1945 to October 1946 high ranking members of the German military and government were prosecuted for war crimes and crimes committed against humanity stemming from their actions before and during WWII. During the month of January the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will present an exhibit about the trials\, covering some of the more notorious defendants such as Hess\, Göring\, Döring\, Jodl and Keitel; the prosecutors\, the charges and the verdicts. DESCRIPTION:Make plans to come to Carrabelle for the 2022 Holiday on the Harbor Street Festival and Boat Parade of Lights on Saturday\, December 10\, 2022 at 1 PM – 8 PM in beautiful downtown Carrabelle\, Florida. This street festival\, hosted by the Carrabelle Chamber of Commerce\, will feature terrific children’s activities\, arts and crafts\, delicious food and drink\, live entertainment\, a lighted boat parade and a fireworks finale. This free\, family-friendly festival has become a favorite Christmas tradition for the entire Forgotten Coast community and beyond! \nThe children’s activities will include several exciting new ones and of course some family favorites. New this year there will be a Children’s Petting Zoo featuring sheep\, goats\, bunnies\, a mini cow\, a mini horse\, a mini donkey and a pig! Also this year in addition to the wonderful Sheriff’s Department bouncy house\, there will also be a huge inflatable slide. Returning are some of the Holiday on the Harbor traditions like visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus\, face painting and a book giveaway by Bring Me a Book Franklin. \nThis event will also include yummy holiday treats\, a variety of delicious food and wonderful art\, crafts and goods for holiday gifts as well as a craft beer garden. There will be live music by Cody Barber and by the band\, Cheap Sunglasses\, and a street dance with a DJ. The majority of the festivities will take place along the Carrabelle harbor along Marine Street. \nWhile in Carrabelle\, visitors are invited to complete their holiday shopping with unique and one of kind items at Carrabelle’s wonderful stores\, gift shops and art galleries conveniently located within walking distance of the festival. Then guests can enjoy delicious fresh seafood and tasty home-style cooking at one of several cafes\, restaurants or festival food vendors. \nAfter enjoying hours of food\, festivities\, and fun\, festival-goers are invited to watch the magical Christmas parade of boats decked out in lights\, décor\, music and even some holiday outfits! Find a spot along the water and enjoy this parade with double the lights as the Carrabelle harbor beautifully reflects back the glow of the lighted boat decorations. See this special nautical tradition from an unbeatable viewing point by entering your own decorated boat for free! \nThe parade starts at around 6:15 pm and proceeds around the Carrabelle harbor between the Marine Street Fishing Pavilion and the Tillie Miller Bridge on US 98 so it can be enjoyed from many viewing spots along the route. The exhibit will then become a permanent installation. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. The museum and exhibit are open Wednesdays 12-5 pm\, Thursdays thru Saturdays 10 am – 5 pm and Sundays 12 – 5 pm. \nThis exhibit will explore Dog Island’s rich maritime history\, and especially focus on those shipwrecks that resulted from the Category 5 direct hit\, the “Carrabelle Hurricane” in 1899 through amazing photographs. Dog Island was a safe harbor for European explorers\, smugglers\, fishermen and lumbermen. In 2018\, Hurricane Michael uncovered parts of two ships that were wrecked during the 1899 event. Learn why these ships were visiting Carrabelle and which of our exports they took back to Europe. \nAn original video featuring expert underwater archaeologist Chuck Meide describes the process of identifying the sunken ships. It informs visitors about what to do when they come across an artifact on public land whether that’s a piece of a shipwreck\, an arrowhead\, or a piece of pottery. This exhibit was funded in part as a heritage education project by the Florida Department of State\, Division of Historic Preservation and the State of Florida. \nThis exhibit created by curator Joan Matey is the first to be installed in the museum’s refurbished upstairs. Please note that the upstairs currently can only be accessed by stairs and is therefore temporarily not accessible to those with mobility issues. An elevator has been funded through a grant and through dedicated fundraising efforts and will be installed by next summer. DESCRIPTION:TICKETS FOR THIS EVENT ARE SOLD OUT. \n================ \nThe Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a special Blues & BBQ Full Moon Lighthouse event on Friday\, December 9\, 2022 from 6-8 pm in Carrabelle\, FL. This special outdoor event will feature live Blues music\, a glowing bon fire at the fire pit\, and delicious BBQ. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to see the gorgeous natural surroundings of the St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the evening sky. Live music will be provided by the Musical duo\, “Blues Meets Girl”. Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. The museum and gift shop will be open for browsing and shopping. Admission for this special Full Moon event is $15 per adult and $8 per child. (Climbs are not included in this price.) TICKETS FOR THIS EVENT ARE SOLD OUT. \nBlues Meets Girl is a collaboration of British Blues veteran Mr. Downchild and Texas born singer/songwriter Kasimira. Together they weave their influences and experiences creating Down Home\, Smokin’ Sexy Blues. \nFor December’s special event\, admission must be purchased in advance. Admission cost is $15 each for adults and $8 each for children and includes the live music\, bon fire\, delicious BBQ and museum access. \nIn addition\, some guests may also choose to enjoy evening tower climbs. The climb to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast rewards climbers with breathtaking views of the bay. Climbers must be at least 44” tall. An advance climb timeslot reservation is required and can be made by calling 850-697-2732. Climbers will pay the climb fee (adult $5\, child $3) in the gift shop during the event. \nA limited number of climbers (max of 7) are allowed at one time. There will be a time limit for viewing from the top. Guests who would like a more leisurely climbing experience are welcome to enjoy one of the daytime climbs available every Wednesday through Sunday. Small Business Saturday encourages people to support small businesses during the holiday season and throughout the year. Carrabelle Chamber members offer one-of-a-kind goods and services and serve up fresh seafood and true home-style cooking. As an official Small Business Saturday Neighborhood Champion\, the Carrabelle Chamber of Commerce is proud to be a major supporter of businesses and the community.\n\n     The Carrabelle Chamber of Commerce is celebrating Small Business Saturday with an event of shopping\, food and fun. The Carrabelle Chamber will be hosting a Small Business Saturday Welcome Station at the Carrabelle Visitors Center and Chamber Office at 105 St. James Avenue\, Carrabelle\, FL. At this Welcome Station\, the Chamber will be promoting the area’s small local businesses and sharing information on members’ sales and specials on a treasure shopping guide with over 30 locations. Helping customers find and take advantage of sales and promotions on this special day. The Chamber will also be providing refreshments and live music from one of our local favorites\, Cody Barber\, for shoppers and guests to enjoy as they explore the community’s galleries\, museum gift shops\, marina stores\, unique gift shops and stores\, restaurants and other small business members that make up this wonderful community.\n\n     Current Chamber members are encouraged to contact the Carrabelle Chamber today to sign up to be included on the special shopping guide for free! The museum and exhibit are open Wednesdays 12-5 pm\, Thursdays thru Saturdays 10 am – 5 pm and Sundays 12 – 5 pm. \nThis exhibit will explore Dog Island’s rich maritime history\, and especially focus on those shipwrecks that resulted from the direct hit of the “Carrabelle Hurricane” in 1899 through amazing photographs. Dog Island was a safe harbor for European explorers\, smugglers\, fishermen and lumbermen. In 2018\, Hurricane Michael uncovered parts of two ships that were wrecked during the 1899 event. Learn why these ships were visiting Carrabelle and which of our exports they took back to Europe. \nAn original video featuring expert underwater archaeologist Chuck Meide describes the process of identifying the sunken ships. It informs visitors about what to do when they come across an artifact on public land whether that’s a piece of a shipwreck\, an arrowhead\, or a piece of pottery. This exhibit was funded in part as a heritage education project by the Florida Department of State\, Division of Historic Preservation and the State of Florida. \nThis exhibit created by curator Joan Matey is the first to be installed in the museum’s refurbished upstairs. Please note that the upstairs currently can only be accessed by stairs and is therefore temporarily not accessible to those with mobility issues. An elevator has been funded through a grant and through dedicated fundraising efforts and will be installed by next summer. DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is excited to announce the grand opening of a new exhibit on “Shipwrecks of Dog Island.” This Grand Opening Celebration will start on Wednesday\, October 12 at 12 noon and run through December 10 at 6 pm. DESCRIPTION:Crooked River Lighthouse Hosts a Night of Magical History\nGlowing lanterns\, music\, dance and night time tower climbs bring magic & history together. \nLantern Fest will be celebrated on Saturday\, November 19 from 6-10 pm on the park grounds at Crooked River Lighthouse\, 1975 Highway 98 West\, Carrabelle Beach\, FL. This unique\, outdoor festival\, best known for its awesome display of over a hundred colorful\, hanging lanterns\, lights up the night with magic and history at the 1895 maritime landmark. Special activities include amazing music by The Bottom Dollar Boys\, the spectacular glow-in-the-dark performance from the Tallahassee Community College Dance Company\, special evening tower climbs\, ancient craft demonstrations\, enchanting glowing lantern display\, museum displays\, gift shop\, and delicious food and desserts for sale. Don’t miss this evening of music\, dance\, night tower climbs\, glowing lanterns and yummy food from vendors. Admission in advance is $10 for adults and $2 for children for an evening of music\, dance\, and glowing lanterns. SUMMARY:Jellyfish Lantern-Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will once again be offering one of their very popular lantern-making workshops. This one on Saturday\, November 19 from 1:00-4:00 pm at the Franklin County Senior Center at 201 NW Ave F\, Carrabelle\, FL. Wonderful volunteer\, Lisa Keith-Lucas\, will guide attendees in making the very popular Jellyfish Lanterns! These enchanting lanterns are highly admired at Lantern Fest and are fairly easy to make. \nBasic materials (colorful plastic bowls\, bubble wrap\, sheer fabrics and fairy lights)\, instruction and hands on help will be provided at the workshop. Attendees are invited to bring any additional materials they may like to really personalize their creations! Cost is $8 a person to cover the cost of materials. Participants will be able to explore their creative side and personalize their lantern to make it uniquely their own. At the end of the workshop\, attendees will go home with their own lovely\, finished lantern. Participants are encouraged to bring their glowing creation to the Crooked River Lighthouse for Lantern Fest that evening from 6-10 pm to add to the awesome display. \nSpaces are limited to a maximum of 20 attendees. Reservations are required to participate in this workshop.
