DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits throughout the month of March – one to honor our country’s canine military veterans and the other to recognize the role of cartoonists in WWII. These exhibits will open Tuesday\, February 28 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 1. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to honor commemorate the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout history. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs\, but did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nDuring WWII\, the press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. The cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington DC. Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger\, as well as the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writer Series 03/29
DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Libraries continues its popular writers’ series entitled\, “Pen to Paper” with another interesting program scheduled for Wednesday\, March 29 at 2:00 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. The next session will feature two writers\, Sue Cronkite and Sydney Watson\, on fiction. \nSue Riddle Cronkite\, long-time journalist\, has turned to writing fiction\, with two books\, White Sheets: Where the Hippies Meet the Klan\, and Louette’s Wake. Cronkite has also published local history books\, personal diaries\, and memoirs of people in her native Wiregrass area\, and taught creative writing. Her short stories have won first place in college anthologies\, including Tobacco Velvet\, which was first place in an F. Scott Fitzgerald Museum short-story contest. At the Birmingham (AL) News she was an editorial page writer\, assistant state editor\, feature writer and reporter. She wrote a syndicated column called “Single Parent\,” and was a long-time correspondent for Life Magazine. She edited and published history books including Apalachicola before 1861 by Harry P. Owens; Washington: Florida’s 12th County\, by E. W. Carswell; Heart and History of Holmes County (FL) by Anna Paget Wells\, plus some Marlene Womack books\, including War Comes to Florida’s Northern Gulf Coast. \nSydney Watson is an author\, adventurer\, Florida native and English professor. She has published and won awards in Odet\, a literary journal\, for creative non-fiction and in Seven Hills\, for fiction and creative non-fiction. Her novel\, Island Salt\, awarded Best Book Finalist by US Book News was set in the Bahamas where Sydney lived with her husband for 10 years. She has also lived in Costa Rica\, Portugal and Hawaii. She continues the academic portion of her career teaching online university courses in writing and literature and she is currently working on a sequel to Island Salt set in Apalachicola. \nUpcoming Pen to Paper events:\nMonday\, April 3\, 2:00 pm – Historian & Author\, Dale Cox on local historical non-fiction. One of his last public speaking appearances. SUMMARY:Meet the Artist Reception for Bradlee Shanks
DESCRIPTION:Rio Carrabelle is inviting guests to an opening reception with outstanding artist Bradlee Shanks on Saturday\, March 25th from 6-9 pm in the historic Rio Carrabelle Building. This exhibit\, entitled Dog Island Jewels\, was inspired by the beautiful nature found on Dog Island along the Forgotten Coast\, a place for escape and discovery. The highly detailed landscapes have been described as “alluring and imaginative”. They are created by a labor-intensive process: applying up to 70 layers of braille ink\, building texture and depth in these unique pieces of art. The result is highly reflective\, causing light to move across the face of the art as the viewer approaches. The surface and colors of his work are notable for their subtle nuances and amazing vibrancy. Photographs do not do these artworks justice. They must be seen in person. Guests are encouraged to see Bradlee’s stunning art and hear from the artist himself while enjoying live music and refreshments. \nMr. Shanks is a recognized leader in the area of digitally mediated printmaking. His masterful technique constructs an intricate reality\, combining drawn\, photographic and digital processes. Bradlee says the act of making art is\, “a joyful process for me – which comes from the mind’s delight coupled with years of artistic practice. I have been a practitioner of many different kinds of processes: exploiting the language of painterly\, drawn\, digital and photomechanical printmaking. The body of work is eclectic and idiosyncratic. What inspires me is trust in the idea that something deeply personal is also\, simultaneously\, universal.” \nMr. Shanks received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from the University of South Dakota and a Master’s in Fine Arts from Arizona State University. He has exhibited in over 150 national and international group exhibitions\, in addition to exhibits at the University of Alabama\, Auburn University\, the University of Georgia\, University of Alaska and Tampa area galleries. \nIn addition to his extensive exhibitions\, Mr. Shanks has served as a panelist and demonstrator at numerous national and international printmaking conferences. His work is in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC\, the Fogg Museum in Boston\, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City. He was a professor and the head of Printmaking at the University of South Florida for 34 years until he retired in 2020. (And is now a full-time artist.) \nThis exhibition of Bradlee’s distinctive and engaging artworks is on display at Rio Carrabelle Art Gallery Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10 am -3 pm at 102 St. James Avenue (US Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, Florida. The FSU Department of Communications’ 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell” will be shown. SUMMARY:Dice Run for Camp Gordon Johnston
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is pleased to announce that the 4th Annual Dice Run will be again hitting the highway on Saturday\, March 11\, in Carrabelle\, FL.  As part of the 28th Annual Camp Gordon Johnston Day Celebration\, the Dice Run will take place immediately following Camp Gordon Johnston’s Veterans Parade and is a much-needed fundraiser to support the museum’s mission. The funds raised by this event are used to preserve the heritage of the men and women who trained at Camp Gordon Johnston\, to share the stories of those who served in WWII\, as well as honor all military veterans. \nDuring this fun event\, participants will drive along beautiful coastal Highway 98 to various fun locations through Franklin County\, rolling dice at each one. At the end of the day\, those with the highest and the lowest combined dice rolls will win prizes. All types of vehicles are welcome to participate. Any street legal vehicle is encouraged to participate. Registration for the Dice Run will be open from 12-1:30 PM at the first Dice Run stop\, Camp Gordon Johnston Museum\, 1873 US Hwy 98 West\, at Carrabelle Beach\, FL.  This year’s official CGJ Dice Run stops also include Fathom’s Steam Room & Raw Bar in Carrabelle\, The Station Raw Bar in Apalachicola\, Eastpoint Beer Company\, and Paddy’s Raw Bar on St. George Island. The run will conclude by 4:30 PM at the last stop\, American Legion Post #82 in Lanark with a meal\, winner prizes\, 50/50 and over $2000 in door prizes. Ticket cost for this event is $15 for the rider/driver and $5 for each passenger and includes one dice card and great food at the last stop. \nGuests are urged to come to Carrabelle early to enjoy the Veterans Parade either as a participant or a spectator. The parade starts at 10:45 AM on Saturday\, March 11 in downtown Carrabelle. Visitors are also welcome to visit the museum to learn amazing stories of the region’s WWII heroes and see the remarkable artifacts. \nSponsors\, volunteers\, and door prize donors are needed. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is celebrating the 28th Annual Camp Gordon Johnston Day Parade on Saturday\, March 11\, 2023 starting at 10:45 am ET in Carrabelle\, FL. This parade is planned especially to honor our country’s remaining WWII veterans as well as recognize and salute all veterans from WWII to present. All veterans\, their family and friends as well as the general public are asked to come to Carrabelle to join the celebration of our military veterans. The museum needs the community’s support and participation to make this celebration more special than ever for our veterans. \nThe Camp Gordon Johnston Parade pays tribute to all veterans of all branches of service. This community parade typically features vintage museum vehicles like the WWII DUKW\, Willis Jeep\, and German Lieferwagen. In addition\, entries include other military vehicles\, motorcycles\, JROTC units\, color guards\, veteran organizations and auxiliary units\, and of course\, many civic and community floats\, decorated golf carts\, gorgeous classic cars\, Shriners and beauty queens of all ages. The parade will wind through downtown Carrabelle along US Hwy 98. \nCamp Gordon Johnston Museum invites everyone to participate in the parade. Participants do not need any military affiliation to participate\, just an appreciation for veterans and military. Individuals\, community organizations and businesses are all welcome to participate with a float\, vehicle or as walkers. Participants can show their support for our veterans and military service members by displaying red\, white and blue colors. There is no cost to participate in the parade. For best parade placement\, participants are asked to fill out the parade entry form found at https://www.campgordonjohnston.com/visit/cgj-days/ and return it by March 6\, 2023. Participants who do not register are still encouraged to join. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum\, located at 1873 Highway 98 West\, will be open Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. Guests are encouraged to come and learn the amazing stories of the region’s WWII heroes and see the remarkable artifacts. Overflow and large vehicle parking is available directly across US Hwy 98 at Carrabelle Public Beach Park. SUMMARY:Full Moon Climb at Crooked River Lighthouse 3/07
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Lighthouse Climb on Tuesday\, March 7\, 2023 from 7:00-9:00 pm in Carrabelle\, FL. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to see the gorgeous natural surroundings of the St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the rising moon. \nGifted musical trio\, “Boats A Rock’n” will be performing a wide range of upbeat\, toe-tapping tunes spanning musical styles from reggae\, folk\, jazz\, rock\, blues as well as a few originals. This lively group features singer songwriter\, Susan David on acoustic rhythm guitar\, harmonica and lead vocals along with Terry Koral on lead guitar and vocals and David Riggs on bass guitar. \nGuests can also visit the Keeper’s House Museum and browse inside the Lighthouse Gift Shop for unique nautical gifts and souvenirs. Visitors can also enjoy the glowing fire pit (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. \nThe climb to the top of the tallest Forgotten Coast lighthouse rewards bold climbers with breathtaking views of the bay. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. All climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. Advance reservations are required for those who wish to climb the lighthouse tower during this event by calling the Lighthouse gift shop. \nA limited number of climbers (max of 7) are allowed at one time. There will be a time limit for viewing from the top. Guests who would like a more leisurely climbing experience are welcome to enjoy one of the daytime climbs available every Wednesday through Sunday. Masks are welcome but not required. \nCrooked River Lighthouse is located in Carrabelle\, just west of the Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1975 Hwy 98 W\, Carrabelle. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits throughout the month of March – one to honor our country’s canine military veterans and the other to recognize the role of cartoonists in WWII. These exhibits will open Tuesday\, February 28 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 1. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to honor commemorate the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout history. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs\, but did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nDuring WWII\, the press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. The cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington DC. Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger\, as well as the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writers' Series 03/06
DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Libraries continues its popular writers’ series entitled\, “Pen to Paper” with another interesting program scheduled for Monday\, March 6 at 2:00 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. The next session will feature three writers\, D. J. Mays\, Tiffany Jo Howell & Ginnah Howard\, who will be discussing Sci-Fi\, Young Adult Fiction and Biographical/ Historical Fiction. \n  \nLocal author D.J. Mays has always been a fan of science fiction. She began as an author with “The Rebel” in Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Leroni of Darkover anthology. After that\, she spent years as a research scientist\, publishing actual science rather than science fiction. Only recently has she been able to write full-time. Her trilogy\, Tales of the Rebel League\, is set in the near future after an attempted alien invasion. The books of the trilogy are Liberty Below Zero\, The Key of Three\, and Insight. She plans to continue the series but has also begun work on an unrelated science fiction trilogy\, as well as a non-fiction book about her work with wild and domestic animals. \n  \nSince her early days\, Tiffany Jo Howell has been telling stories of helping her friends get in trouble and instigating mischief. Maybe she never grew up because children still gravitate to her wherever she goes. Perhaps this is why writing in an easy voice for the younger ones comes naturally to her. Tiffany originally hails from Minnesota but now lives with her husband and most perfect cat\, Sweet Pea\, along Florida’s Gulf Coast. One of her favorite writing spots is at the local sports bar with music playing and sweet tea flowing. She will discuss her book\, The Finder’s Tales: Marco. \n  \nGinnah Howard has written several books including I’m Sick of This Already\, Rope & Bone\, Night Navigation\, and Doing Time Outside. Though she didn’t discover writing until much later in life\, she was a lover of books who could be happy for hours in stories. Her favorites were usually English orphans or a girl in the limberlost\, characters wronged by people she loathed. She is a former English teacher with twenty-seven years of experience teaching at the high school level. Upon her retirement she was found she finally had more time to sit down to put words on the page. \n  \nUpcoming Pen to Paper events: \nWednesday\, March 29\, 2:00 pm –  Sue Cronkite & Sydney Watson\, on fiction \nMonday\, April 3\, 2:00 pm –    Historian & Author\, Dale Cox on local historical non-fiction. **This will be one of his last public speaking appearances. (Reservations are encouraged as seating is limited.) \nMonday\, April 17\, 2:00 pm – Anthony Lee Watkins & Dawn Radford\, on poetry & fiction \nMonday\, May 8\, 2:00 pm – Michael Llado-Davila & Lois Swoboda\,  travel memoirs & Children’s books \nThe Carrabelle Branch Library is located at 311 St. James Avenue\, Carrabelle\, FL. These friendly and informal sessions are a delightful chance to meet these local authors and ask questions about their experience. Refreshments will be served.
