SUMMARY:Special Exhibits: Pearl Harbor & Christmas During the War
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits in the month of December. The focus of one exhibit will be on commemorating the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor and the focus of the other exhibit will be on exploring Christmas During the War. These two exhibits will open Tuesday\, November 28 and be on display until Saturday\, December 30.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission.  \nIn honor of the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor\, Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is presenting an exhibit commemorating this dark day in America’s history. World War II came home for the United States on December 7\, 1941\, when the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan attacked the US Western Fleet at the American base Pearl Harbor\, Hawaii. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy”. Learn about those that planned the attack\, the sole Japanese POW taken\, and the heroic efforts by Doris Miller of the USS West Virginia to shoot down attacking Japanese planes. This attack resulted in the declaration of war with Japan and the US entering World War II. Luckily\, the Pacific Fleet’s aircraft carriers were at sea on that day\, and escaped damage to fight later. “Remember Pearl Harbor” became the rallying cry of Americans as they enlisted by the thousands and built up the immense industrial effort needed to achieve victory in 1945. \nThe second special exhibit for this month will reflect on what Christmas was like during the war. Americans had to learn to do with less during the years they were fully engaged in fighting World War II. That had a significant impact on every aspect of American life including how Christmas was celebrated. Americans were encouraged to make their own toys and decorations\, and commercially-made gifts emphasized materials that were not needed for war\, including cloth\, paper and wood. For example the popular Lionel Train toys were converted to cardboard and people learned how to cook and bake with corn syrup once sugar became scarce. Learn more about how rationing changed toys\, food and even decorations during the war.   \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:First Friday at Rio Carrabelle Gallery
DESCRIPTION: Rio Carrabelle Gallery is hosting another one of their popular First Friday art events on Friday\, December 1st from 5:00-8:00 pm at Rio Carrabelle Gallery in downtown Carrabelle. This laid-back\, fun First Friday will feature real local art\, live music\, friendly folks\, talented artists\, and refreshments. Guests can enjoy the gorgeous photography\, paintings and art of some gifted\, local artists while enjoying the sounds of some fabulous\, live music along with lively conversation. As part of this month’s First Friday\, Rio will be celebrating the opening for a new exhibit featuring phenomenal artist and photographer\, Bo May\, with the exhibit\, MOON JAZZ. Guests will also enjoy the outstanding original art of Pat Moore\, Barb Ryan\, Roger Leonard\, William Owen\, and Joe Kotzman.  \n  \nMOON JAZZ is an artistic testament to celestial rhythms\, capturing the ethereal dance of time\, light\, and lunar majesty. The images harmonize with the Major Lunar Standstill—a rare event initiating an 18-year cycle of lunar ascent and retreat\, akin to the ebb and flow of musical notes. This occurrence presents a distinctive chance to document a celestial cycle and become intertwined with the rhythm of the universe. Composed on December 14\, 2005\, at McKissack Beach in Carrabelle\, FL\, the Moon Jazz images are a chronicle of a celestial ballet.  \n  \nEmploying extended time exposures and diverse shutter speeds\, often with nuanced camera movements\, the Moon Jazz series captures the essence of that luminous night. A narrative unfolds through the lens\, revealing a progression from “expressionistic” spontaneity to intentional control. Bo May orchestrated this cosmic jam session with extended time exposures\, diverse shutter speeds\, and camera movements\, akin to a jazz musician experimenting with tempos and rhythms. Noteworthy among the compositions is “Fibonacci Pirouettes\,” intricate moon spirals that defy the constraints of the night sky. \n  \nThe exploration of light\, motion\, and improvisation is an ongoing odyssey for Bo May. Bo invites guests to witness this visual voyage at the Rio Carrabelle Gallery\, where Moon Jazz transcends the boundaries of time and space\, resonating with the eternal cadence of celestial harmony. Rio Carrabelle Art Gallery is located at 102 St. James Avenue (US Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, Florida and is open Thursdays thru Saturdays 10 am – 3 pm. Rio Carrabelle is a unique art and music destination located in beautiful Carrabelle. Visit www.riocarrabelle.com for more information or on Facebook\, The Gallery at Rio Carrabelle.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition for Painter\, Cal Allen
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Rio Carrabelle is thrilled to present an art exhibition featuring the work of talented painter\, Cal Allen in the historic art venue\, Rio Carrabelle in Carrabelle\, Florida. These beautiful works of art are on display now and the exhibition will run through the end of November.  \nCal has expressed his southern heritage through his art for over 60 years. His attention to the details of the coast and his love of nature co-mingle to produce his naturalistic approach. From the lighthouses of North Carolina’s outer banks\, the marshes of coastal Georgia\, and the mudflats of Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast comes the inspiration for much of Cal’s work. \nCal is proficient in oils and watercolors but prefers working in egg tempera. He processes many pigments from local sources. Although primarily self-taught\, Cal has studied the works of the great masters as well as more contemporary artists such as Eakins\, Homer and Wyeth. Inspired by these renowned artists\, he has created his own methods to share his unique view of the world. Cal has received numerous awards and recognitions\, and his works hang in both private and corporate collections throughout this country and England. Cal also enjoys sharing his craft and vision and has taught classes in watercolor\, oil\, acrylic\, and egg tempera in Carrabelle\, Florida. \nRio Carrabelle Art Gallery is open Thursdays- Saturdays from 10 am -3 pm at 102 St. James Avenue (US Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, Florida. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring our Native American Servicemembers
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is excited to announce a special exhibit honoring Native American Servicemen. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, October 31 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, November 25\, 2023. November is National Native American Heritage Month\, and the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum salutes their service and sacrifice. The museum and exhibit is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. The museum will be closed Thursday\, November 24 for Thanksgiving. \n“During World War I and World War II\, hundreds of American Indians joined the United States armed forces and used words from their traditional tribal languages as weapons. The United States military asked them to develop secret battle communications based on their languages—and America’s enemies never deciphered the coded messages they sent. “Code Talkers\,” as they came to be known after World War II\, are twentieth-century American Indian warriors and heroes who significantly aided the victories of the United States and its allies. \nThe Code Talkers’ role in war required intelligence and bravery. They developed and memorized a special code. They endured some of the most dangerous battles and remained calm under fire. They served proudly\, with honor and distinction. Their actions proved critical in several important campaigns\, and they are credited with saving thousands of American and allies’ lives.”\n(Source: The National Museum of the American Indian). \nVisitors are invited to come to the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum during this special exhibit and learn about the Native Americans\, including members of the Choctaw\, Navajo\, Cherokee\, Pima\, Comanche and other nations\, that served their country in World War II. Discover the story of the Code Talkers\, who used their unbreakable code based on their native tongues to help defeat the enemy. Hear the stories of the seven Medal of Honor Recipients in WWII that were Native American. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West.
Rio Carrabelle is a unique art and music destination located in beautiful downtown Carrabelle and features the artwork of local artists William Owen\, Pat Moore\, Barb Ryan\, Roger Leonard\, Bo May as well as Joe Kotzman.
