DESCRIPTION:February marks National African-American History Month\, and Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum recognizes the service of African-American servicemembers in WWII. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission.  \nThis exhibit will include the history of two African-American Infantry Regiments\, the 369th and the 370th\, both of which served with distinction in WWI\, and the prejudice faced by African-American WWI veterans in the interwar years. SUMMARY:Soup-er Celebration (Soup\, Bread\, and Book Sale Event) Carrabelle
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Franklin County Public Libraries will be hosting another Soup-er Celebration – Soup\, Bread\, and Book Sale Event on Saturday\, February 3\, 2024 from 10 am – 1 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library\, 311 St. James Avenue\, Carrabelle\, FL.  \nThis event will feature delicious homemade soups\, freshly baked artisan breads and used books and DVDs. Local residents bring their delicious homemade soups like seafood bisques and gumbos\, chili\, Brunswick stew\, and more and freshly baked artisan breads for the Friends to sell. Past years featured dozens of soups ranging from exotic to healthy to old-fashioned soups. The soups and breads sell out fast so visitors are encouraged to come early to get the best selection. Vintage and used books and used DVDs for all ages are also available for purchase.  \nThis fun celebration will also offer a focus on local culture and art\, with live music from the “Ukulilies”. In addition local artists and artisans will be showcasing some of their stunning local art and goods. This is a family friendly event and all are welcome.  \nThe Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) is a 501(c)(3) organization. The funds raised from the Souper Celebration help the Friends to support the Franklin County Public Libraries in Eastpoint and Carrabelle\, Florida and their goals to provide informational\, educational and cultural materials for the benefit of persons of all ages in the community. The Friends supports many library programs like Summer Reading\, Storytimes\, Book Chats\, Pen to Paper Writers Series\, and more.  \nFunded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse presents the 2nd Annual Crooked River Park Fest 2024\, Saturday\, February 3rd\, 9 am – 9 pm. The all-day festival features a Country ‘Super’ Market from 9 am – 5 pm\, followed by Crooked River Park Fest Event Concert from 6 pm – 9 pm. The Crooked River Lighthouse Museum & Giftshop\, Tower Climbs\, and the new Fresnel Lens exhibit will be open to visitors (details below). \nThis year’s featured line-up for the Special Event Concert will feature the Funky Taters\, a Tallahassee\, Florida 10-piece band that plays jazz\, blues\, funk\, rock\, country folk & reggae\, a mix that has been called the “Music of the Gulf Coast Highway” at the Crooked River Park Stage. \nCountry Market admission is free to the Public from 9 am – 5 pm. The Crooked River Lighthouse Museum & Giftshop and the 1894 Fresnel Lens Exhibit will be open to visitors during both events. Crooked River Park Fest Concert Admission Tickets are $ 20. Discounted presale Concert Admission Tickets are $15 and available online through January 31st.  Buy tickets here!  \nCountry “SUPER” Market 9 am – 5 pm\nThe Country Farmer’s Market features local vendors selling gifts and goodies like fresh roasted coffee\, delicious baked goods\, farm fresh produce\, grass-fed beef\, handcrafted balms & soaps\, regional arts\, local crafts\, and photography. \nStop by and pick up a few market-fresh goods and grab a bite at Carrabelle’s own local Train Stop\, and/or a snack of festival favorites (kettle corn\, boiled peanuts). Shop for gifts and souvenirs from the Keeper House Museum & Gift shop. There will be something for everyone. Last year 40 vendors graced the park grounds\, and we are expecting an expanded variety of market vendors. \nCountry Market Tower Climbs | General Admission (9 am at 5 pm) $5\nGeneral admission tower climbs are available to attendees (13 + yrs. old) for a suggested ($5) donation during country market hours from 9 am – 5 pm. SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writers Series
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle Branch of the Franklin County Public Libraries will be bringing back their exciting writers’ series entitled\, “Pen to Paper” from January through May 2024. Kicking off this wonderful series on Monday\, January 29 at 2 pm will be authors Pat Stanford & Anthony Watkins. The Carrabelle Branch Library is located at 311 St. James Avenue (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. \nDuring the series authors will discuss and share the works they have written and those that are in the works. This will be followed by a question and answer session. These friendly and informal sessions are a chance to meet these area authors and ask questions about their experiences. They are open to anyone interested in learning more about these writers or the writing process. \nPat Stanford is an award-winning author and poet with the non-fiction “Fixing Boo Boo”\, a story of traumatic brain injury\, and two books of poetry “Proverbs of My Season\, Poetry of Transition”\, and “A Motley Miscellany\, Misfit Poems That Fit Together”. All have won gold medals from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association annual Presidents. She has poetry published in several anthologies and won second place in the 2004 Seven Hills Contest with her short story\, “Divorce Sale”. She was born in Philadelphia\, but moved to Florida with her farming family when she was a year old. She lives in Tallahassee with her husband and rambunctious puppy and is currently working on a book of short stories as well as a second nonfiction. \nAnthony Lee Watkins is a writer of poetry including “Union Line Cemetery” and “Written in Darkness”\, a published collection of poems. Anthony has been a poet all his life\, a publisher of various literary journals\, online and in print since 1995. He has given poetry readings\, led poetry discussions and organized poetry events in a variety of schools\, libraries and bookstores. He has also been a volunteer educator at the University of Pennsylvania’s ModPo program. Anthony Watkins will share why he writes and how to become a published poet. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: the Battle of Hürtgen Forest & the Battle of the Bulge
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit in the month of January. The focus of the exhibit will be on the Battle of Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge from the 4th Infantry Division perspective.  This exhibit will be on display until Saturday\, January 27.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission.  \n  \nThe longest continuous battle ever fought by American forces lasted from September 19 to December 16\, 1944 over control of the Hürtgen Forest\, essential to the German plans for their upcoming Ardennes Offensive (which would be known to the Allies as the “Battle of the Bulge”). This small patch of land\, 54 square miles located three miles east of the Germany / Belgium Border\, would end up being extremely costly to the Allies despite a five to one advantage. This battle was somewhat forgotten because of the more famous Battle of the Bulge but it was a bloody and memorable experience for those that fought there. \n  \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum will present these two campaigns from the perspective of the 4th Infantry Division\, also known as the Ivy Division\, which received their amphibious training at Camp Gordon Johnston and landed on D Day at Utah Beach. The Museum has received both financial and historical assistance from the National 4th Infantry Division Association and Division Past President and Historian Bob Babcock. This small patch of land\, 54 square miles located three miles east of the Germany / Belgium Border\, would end up being extremely costly to the Allies despite a five to one advantage. This battle was somewhat forgotten because of the more famous Battle of the Bulge but it was a bloody and memorable experience for those that fought there. \n  \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum will present these two campaigns from the perspective of the 4th Infantry Division\, also known as the Ivy Division\, which received their amphibious training at Camp Gordon Johnston and landed on D Day at Utah Beach. SUMMARY:Full Moon Event at Crooked River Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Event on Thursday\, January 25\, from 6:00-8:00 pm in Carrabelle\, FL. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the full Wolf Moon.  \nAt this month’s Full Moon event\, guests can listen to the fun and cool sounds from DJ Beanie Baby who will be spinning all your 80s favorites. Visitors are invited to come dressed in their finest 80s wear. Plus purchase some delicious food from one of the local favorites\, A Train Stop food truck. In addition to their full menu\, they will also be offering lighthouse kid’s specials.  \nVisitors can also have an after-hours visit to the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit for the lighthouse’s original\, historic Fresnel lens. Guests may also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. Recommended donation for this event is $5 to support the lighthouse and help offset the additional costs for these after-hours events and can be made either via https://www.crookedriverlighthouse.com/full-moon-events/ or at “the gate”.  \nFull Moon tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event for those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest Forgotten Coast lighthouse. SUMMARY:Walking Islands\, Dog Island Is Moving: Speaker Program
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting an interesting speaker program entitled\, “Dog Island Is Moving”. This program will feature an Archaeologist from the Florida Department of State and will be held Saturday\, January 20\, 2024\, at 10 am – 12 pm in the upstairs room at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St. James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. There is no charge for this event.   \n  \nFlorida has the second longest continuous coastline of any state in the United States. Coupled with this\, its many rivers\, lakes\, and sinks mean much of the state’s fascinating archaeological record exists underwater. The Florida Department of State\, Division of Historical Resources is tasked with managing\, interpreting\, promoting\, and protecting archaeological sites on state lands and in state waters. Recently\, archaeologists from the state office conducted a remote sensing and sediment core survey around Dog Island. The purpose of this work was to study how the island has moved over time and how this movement may be affecting shipwrecks and other archaeological sites in the vicinity. This talk will discuss the methods used to map the seafloor around Dog Island and how scuba divers collected and analyzed sediment cores to trace island movement. Preliminary results and plans for future research will also be covered. Finally\, this talk will highlight the importance of protecting archaeological sites and what the public can do to contribute to these efforts. \n  \nThere is no fee for this program. SUMMARY:Soup-er Celebration (Soup\, Bread\, and Book Sale Event) Eastpoint
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Franklin County Public Libraries will be hosting two Soup-er Celebrations – Soup\, Bread\, and Book Sales Events. The first will be held at the Eastpoint Branch Library\, 160 Hickory Dip Rd in Eastpoint FL on Saturday\, January 20\, 2024. The second will be held at the Carrabelle Branch Library\, 311 St. James Avenue\, Carrabelle\, FL on Saturday\, February 3\, 2024. Both will be from 10 am – 2 pm.  \nThese events feature delicious homemade soups\, freshly baked artisan breads and used books and DVDs. Local residents bring their delicious homemade soups like seafood bisques and gumbos\, chili\, Brunswick stew\, and more and freshly baked artisan breads for the Friends to sell. Past years featured dozens of soups ranging from exotic to healthy to old-fashioned soups. The soups and breads sell out fast so visitors are encouraged to come early to get the best selection. Vintage and used books and used DVDs for all ages are also available for purchase.  \nThese events will also offer a focus on local culture and art\, with live music from the “Ukulilies”. In addition local artists and artisans will be showcasing some of their stunning local art and goods. These are family friendly events and all are welcome.  \nThe Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) is a 501(c)(3) organization. The funds raised from the Souper Celebration help the Friends to support the Franklin County Public Libraries in Eastpoint and Carrabelle\, Florida and their goals to provide informational\, educational and cultural materials for the benefit of persons of all ages in the community. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit in the month of January. The focus of the exhibit will be on the Battle of Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge from the 4th Infantry Division perspective.  This exhibit will be on display until Saturday\, January 27.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission.  \n  \nThe longest continuous battle ever fought by American forces lasted from September 19 to December 16\, 1944 over control of the Hürtgen Forest\, essential to the German plans for their upcoming Ardennes Offensive (which would be known to the Allies as the “Battle of the Bulge”). This small patch of land\, 54 square miles located three miles east of the Germany / Belgium Border\, would end up being extremely costly to the Allies despite a five to one advantage. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits in the month of December. The focus of one exhibit will be on commemorating the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor and the focus of the other exhibit will be on exploring Christmas During the War. These two exhibits will open Tuesday\, November 28 and be on display until Saturday\, December 30.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission.  \nIn honor of the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor\, Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is presenting an exhibit commemorating this dark day in America’s history. World War II came home for the United States on December 7\, 1941\, when the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan attacked the US Western Fleet at the American base Pearl Harbor\, Hawaii. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy”. Learn about those that planned the attack\, the sole Japanese POW taken\, and the heroic efforts by Doris Miller of the USS West Virginia to shoot down attacking Japanese planes. This attack resulted in the declaration of war with Japan and the US entering World War II. December market dates will be: Dec 2\, Dec 16\, and Dec 30. \nThe open-air market\, at the foot of the lighthouse\, features local vendors with perfect gifts and goodies like farm-fresh produce\, grass-fed beef\, delicious baked goods like cinnamon rolls and artisan breads and cookies\, batch roasted coffee\, gorgeous art\, handcrafted balms and soaps\, and handmade goods and craft items. \nGuests can also visit the free Museum and browse inside the Lighthouse Gift Shop for unique\, nautical-themed holiday gifts. In addition\, shoppers have the unique opportunity to climb to the top of the lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the Bay. \nThe Market is actively recruiting new and returning vendors. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits in the month of December. The focus of one exhibit will be on commemorating the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor and the focus of the other exhibit will be on exploring Christmas During the War. These two exhibits will open Tuesday\, November 28 and be on display until Saturday\, December 30.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission.  \nIn honor of the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor\, Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is presenting an exhibit commemorating this dark day in America’s history. World War II came home for the United States on December 7\, 1941\, when the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan attacked the US Western Fleet at the American base Pearl Harbor\, Hawaii. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy”. Learn about those that planned the attack\, the sole Japanese POW taken\, and the heroic efforts by Doris Miller of the USS West Virginia to shoot down attacking Japanese planes. This attack resulted in the declaration of war with Japan and the US entering World War II.
