SUMMARY:Special Exhibit on the Women of WWII
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on U.S. Women in WWII.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, March 4\, 2025 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, March 29.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission.   \nAmerican women served in the war effort as members of the WACs\, WAVEs\, SPARs and in the US Marine Corps as well as civilians in the war industries throughout the country. This exhibit will explain the role of women\, highlighting individuals like US Navy Flight Nurses\, who were the first women to arrive at battles like Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The exhibit will feature artifacts including uniforms\, handbooks and even a practice aptitude test given to women applicants hoping to enlist. Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will also remember and honor many of the local women of Franklin County who served in WWII. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park\, at 1873 Hwy 98 West. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit Honoring Carrabelle’s African-American Pioneers
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is pleased to announce a special exhibit for February in honor of Black History Month\, recognizing the remarkable achievements of several notable African-American individuals with ties to Carrabelle. This exhibit will be open from Wednesday\, February 5 through Sunday\, March 2. Visitors can explore the exhibit at the Carrabelle History Museum on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \nThe exhibit offers an inspiring journey into the lives of just a few of the extraordinary individuals who exemplify the resilience and talent of Carrabelle’s African-American community. John C. Robinson\, the “Brown Condor” and “Father of the Tuskegee Airmen\,” overcame significant barriers to pioneer aviation achievements and contribute to Ethiopia’s resistance against Mussolini’s forces. John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil\, a celebrated Negro Leagues baseball star\, became Major League Baseball’s first African-American scout and coach\, co-founding the Negro League Baseball Museum and earning the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  \nThe exhibit also shares the story of Abraham Allen\, one of Carrabelle’s original founders\, who laid a foundation for progress\, while his daughter\, Laura “Aunt Laura” Wiggins\, became a cherished midwife\, delivering babies and providing care for the community. The legacy continues with Aunt Laura’s granddaughter\, Classie Lowery\, known as the “Mother of the Hill\,” who raised and educated 26 children while dedicating herself to faith and community service.  The exhibit also honors the broader contributions of Carrabelle’s African-American community\, highlighting their vital roles in shaping the town’s early history and culture. SUMMARY:Moonlit Evening Celebrates Spring at Crooked River Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Moonlit Evening at the Lighthouse event on Friday\, March 14\, 2025 in Carrabelle\, FL. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the sunset and rising Worm Moon. This special evening kicks off early with Worm Grunting Demos from 5:00-6:00 pm ET\, a fascinating pre-event showcasing the art of enticing earthworms from the ground—a nod to the evening’s theme. From 6:00-9:00 pm ET\, visitors can enjoy the main event beneath the beautiful Worm Moon\, named for the earthworms that signal the arrival of spring. \nVisitors can experience an after-hours tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit of the lighthouse’s original\, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. A glowing bonfire will light up the night\, creating a perfect atmosphere to relax and enjoy the evening—don’t forget to bring a chair! \nFor those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast\, evening tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay. Evening climbs cost $10 and climb reservations are strongly encouraged due to limited availability. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall and children under 12 (FREE) with ticketed adults. This year’s theme having to do with our environment and its preservation. \nForgotten Coast Plein Air\, America’s Great Paint-out\, is among the world’s most prestigious plein air events. Artistic excellence continues to be the trademark of this 10-day festival. \nPainters with their easels will be seen everywhere from Mexico Beach to Carrabelle. They welcome on-lookers and interested persons. \nOn March 18\, 2025\, four invited artists and others will be painting in the area of Carrabelle. The painters have been heard to say enjoy painting in Carrabelle because it is interesting\, quaint\, and lovely with misty mornings\, boats\, and rusty roof textures. DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is pleased to announce a special exhibit for February in honor of Black History Month\, recognizing the remarkable achievements of several notable African-American individuals with ties to Carrabelle. This exhibit will be open from Wednesday\, February 5 through Sunday\, March 2. Visitors can explore the exhibit at the Carrabelle History Museum on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \nThe exhibit offers an inspiring journey into the lives of just a few of the extraordinary individuals who exemplify the resilience and talent of Carrabelle’s African-American community. John C. Robinson\, the “Brown Condor” and “Father of the Tuskegee Airmen\,” overcame significant barriers to pioneer aviation achievements and contribute to Ethiopia’s resistance against Mussolini’s forces. John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil\, a celebrated Negro Leagues baseball star\, became Major League Baseball’s first African-American scout and coach\, co-founding the Negro League Baseball Museum and earning the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  \nThe exhibit also shares the story of Abraham Allen\, one of Carrabelle’s original founders\, who laid a foundation for progress\, while his daughter\, Laura “Aunt Laura” Wiggins\, became a cherished midwife\, delivering babies and providing care for the community. The legacy continues with Aunt Laura’s granddaughter\, Classie Lowery\, known as the “Mother of the Hill\,” who raised and educated 26 children while dedicating herself to faith and community service.  The exhibit also honors the broader contributions of Carrabelle’s African-American community\, highlighting their vital roles in shaping the town’s early history and culture. SUMMARY:2025 Carrabelle Culture Crawl
DESCRIPTION:Art. Music. Heritage. Fun. \nThe Carrabelle History Museum is hosting the Carrabelle Culture Crawl on Saturday\, March 22 from 10 am to 3 pm. This cultural event is a free celebration of local culture\, art\, music\, history\, food\, and fun in the heart of downtown Carrabelle. This is a fantastic chance for visitors to have some fun and experience the wonderful local culture of Carrabelle.  \nThe Crawl will bring live music and entertainment to the streets of Carrabelle\, with Florida folk music\, classic country\, modern hits\, and oldies. A variety of musicians will be performing including Frank Lindamood\, Lewis Christie\, Sumpin’ Old & Sumpin’ New\, the Ukulilies\, the Waterbirds and more. Visitors will spot fun\, costumed characters from the Fishy Fashion Show wandering the streets. These walking photo ops are a fan-favorite. Plus\, the talented Lydia Countryman and friends will delight the crowd with their life-size dog puppets walking the streets.  \nArt will abound at the Crawl featuring local artists and artisans. Visitors can watch as artists paint “plein air” offering a glimpse at the creative process in action. Shops and galleries will feature lots of artwork available for viewing and buying. There will be special activities at the Rio Carrabelle Gallery including one of their artists painting on the street. The always popular public art drawing and coloring activity will be hung in storefront windows as well as  sidewalk chalk and other family friendly art activities. Guests can also stroll over to see Carrabelle’s two large\, stunning murals. \nClassic\, vintage\, and modern cars will roll into the Crawl\, offering a stunning showcase for auto enthusiasts. Visitors can also enjoy demos and displays highlighting traditional skills that connect with the craftsmanship of the past. Features include quilting by Lanark Village Wandering Star Quilters\, cast net throwing with Greg Daniels\, antique upholstering by Daleen of I. C. Blue Upholstery\, and blacksmithing by Chris Cauthen. And step into the world of archaeology and unearth how artifacts\, like cannon shell fragments\, reveal stories of the past with Florida Public Archaeology Network.    \nCarrabelle’s food scene will shine with seafood favorites like shrimp\, scallops\, and crab cakes\, plus hearty options like burgers\, fajitas\, and deli sandwiches. Sweet treats include key lime pie\, donuts\, and açaí bowls\, alongside coffee\, shakes\, and energy teas. The Dog Gone Snowcones truck will serve up hot dogs and refreshing snowcones. \nGuests can learn about the culture and history of the area with exhibits at the Carrabelle History Museum including Shipwrecks of Dog Island; Tate’s Hell the Place\, Tate’s Hell the Legend; and the Native People’s display. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit on the Women of WWII
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on U.S. Women in WWII.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, March 4\, 2025 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, March 29.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission.   \nAmerican women served in the war effort as members of the WACs\, WAVEs\, SPARs and in the US Marine Corps as well as civilians in the war industries throughout the country. This exhibit will explain the role of women\, highlighting individuals like US Navy Flight Nurses\, who were the first women to arrive at battles like Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The exhibit will feature artifacts including uniforms\, handbooks and even a practice aptitude test given to women applicants hoping to enlist. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Remembering the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit to remember the Holocaust\, Hitler’s program to commit genocide against those he deemed unworthy\, especially Europe’s Jews.  This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, April 1 and be on display at the museum until Saturday\, May 3.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. Groups that were arrested and detained included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. Visitors are invited to come see this sobering exhibit\, and help our society remember those that were victims of atrocity\, prejudice\, and hate.  \nThe internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar and it marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising which started on April 19\, 1943. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit to remember the Holocaust\, Hitler’s program to commit genocide against those he deemed unworthy\, especially Europe’s Jews.  This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, April 1 and be on display at the museum until Saturday\, May 3.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. Groups that were arrested and detained included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Remembering the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit to remember the Holocaust\, Hitler’s program to commit genocide against those he deemed unworthy\, especially Europe’s Jews.  This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, April 1 and be on display at the museum until Saturday\, May 3.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. Groups that were arrested and detained included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. Visitors are invited to come see this sobering exhibit\, and help our society remember those that were victims of atrocity\, prejudice\, and hate.  \nThe internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar and it marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising which started on April 19\, 1943. In Hebrew\, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. In 2025\, Yom HaShoah will be recognized beginning at sunset on the evening of Wednesday\, April 23 – Thursday\, April 24. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Vintage Office - Relics from City Hall's Past
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is pleased to share a special display\, “Vintage Office – Relics from City Hall’s Past”. This display is open now through Sunday\, June 1. This unique exhibit offers a nostalgic look into the daily workings of Carrabelle’s city government and the tools that helped keep the city running. Visitors can explore the exhibit at the Carrabelle History Museum on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \nStep back in time and explore original artifacts from Carrabelle’s historic City Hall office. This fascinating display features an authentic 1953 Underwood Standard Typewriter used by the Assistant City Clerk Mary Mathes\, a mechanical adding machine\, official city log books\, a municipal court log from the 1940s (showing lots of charges of fighting and disorderly conduct)\, and a small black book belonging to City Clerk Charles Lee Daniels. Visitors can also see vintage receipt books\, the original city seal stamp\, and an assortment of rubber stamps once used for municipal business—each item offering a tangible link to Carrabelle’s mid-20th century administration. \nTypewriters revolutionized record keeping. Before their widespread use\, government staff painstakingly hand wrote every record. The introduction of typewriters marked a new era of efficiency and organization in municipal operations. \nWhether you’re a history buff\, longtime local\, or curious visitor\, this special exhibit brings to life the everyday workings of Carrabelle’s past and celebrates the people  and processes behind the paperwork. \nThe Carrabelle History Museum is located at 106 SE Avenue B\, in historic downtown Carrabelle\, FL.
