DESCRIPTION:Starting April 30 and lasting until June 1\, the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum will present a special exhibit on the most violent and costliest campaign of WWII\, the battle to take Okinawa. The battle started with the capture of the Kerama Islands by the 77th infantry Division on March 26\, 1945\, and ended 98 days later on July 2. This effort involved three marine divisions and four infantry divisions making up the Tenth Army\, which had its own tactical air force\, and was supported by naval and amphibious commands. The battle cost more lives on both sides than any other campaign in the Pacific. The taking of Okinawa provided a base from which Operation Downfall\, the invasion of the Japanese mainland\, was to be launched. Operation Downfall\, of course\, was made unnecessary by the surrender of Japan in September of 1945. Included in the exhibit will be historic photos and Marine Corps artifacts. \nThis exhibit will open Thursday\, April 30 1 at 11 am and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, June 1 at 5 pm. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Remembering the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit to remember the Holocaust\, Hitler’s program to commit genocide against those he deemed unworthy\, especially Europe’s Jews. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, April 2 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 27. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. Groups that were arrested and detained included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. Visitors are invited to come see this sobering exhibit\, and help our society remember those that were victims of atrocity\, prejudice\, and hate. \nThe internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar and it marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising which started on April 19\, 1943. In Hebrew\, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. In 2024\, Yom HaShoah will be recognized beginning at sunset on the evening of Sunday May 5 – Monday May 6. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. DESCRIPTION:Make plans to join the Carrabelle Chamber of Commerce for the 2024 Carrabelle Riverfront Festival\, a fun-filled day along the beautiful historic Carrabelle Florida waterfront! Enjoy family-friendly activities\, live music\, unique entertainment\, colorful arts & craft vendors\, and delicious food vendors\, Saturday\, April 27\, 2024 from 10 am – 6 pm. There will be plenty of activities for the young and old along the beautiful historic harbor. This event is FREE\, pet friendly\, and open to the public. \nThis year\, the Carrabelle Chamber is excited to introduce the Adventure Family Circus who will be thrilling festival goers with three exhilarating aerial circus shows. Adventure Family Circus is an internationally touring small family circus show. They are an Aerial and Acrobatic show with acts including high flying aerial and acrobatic acts\, aerial rope\, aerial silks\, aerial lyra\, mini trampoline\, juggling and comedy. It’s a spectacle the whole family will enjoy! \nAlso joining the Carrabelle Riverfront Festival will be Redemptive Love Farm and Rescue bringing their petting zoo and feeding station. Adults and children alike love to enter and get hands-on with the sweet farm pets including chickens\, ducks\, bunnies\, and young goats. At the feeding station\, guests can also meet which will include animals like a llama\, mini-donkey\, mini-cow\, goat\, alpaca\, or emu! It’s a hands-on experience that both children and adults will cherish. \nThe festival will also feature the always popular activities for the kids\, including children’s mini-train rides and a bouncy house. These familiar favorites add additional fun to the already entertaining atmosphere. \nFeet will be tapping to the upbeat favorites from across the decades with talented musicians including John Jeremiah plus Kevin Andrew and the Rockulla Performers. Guests will also be delighted by wonderful dance performances of the Forgotten Coast Dancing Witches and TCC Dancers. The entertainment doesn’t end there as there will also be fun music by DJ Beanie Baby throughout the day.   \nAnd of course the festival will feature the family-friendly Exhibitor Expo on Avenue B\, hosted by the Carrabelle History Museum\, with informative exhibits like a WWII military vehicle\, the fire-wise cabin\, shark jaws\, animal skulls\, and a display of Florida’s pioneer days. A wild animal ambassador\, Moonlight\, the Great Horned Owl will also be visiting from a local rescue. In addition Avenue B will host the Pet & People Cooling Station.\n \nVisitors can browse tons of festival vendors\, exhibitors\, and booths with interesting arts and craft items\, delicious food\, and local displays as well as explore the local shops\, museums\, and restaurants for even more choices. DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting a special exhibit\, “Tate’s Hell\, the Legend\, Tate’s Hell\, the Place”. This exhibit will open on Saturday\, March 16 and run through Saturday\, April 27. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am  to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs.  \nThis Tate’s Hell exhibit will explore the many facets of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, the misadventures and fate of Cebe Tate\, and how Tate’s Hell State Forest got its name. Wildlife and landscape photos taken in Tate’s Hell by John Spohrer and Jon Johnson will be on display. This exhibit will also include the song\, The Ballad of Tate’s Hell by Will McLean and performed by Frank Lindamood and the FSU Department of Communications’ 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell”. “In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry\, through continuous occupation of the same soil. Local events can flower into legend and ballad and proverb\, and village ways can harden into custom.” Richard M. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Remembering the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit to remember the Holocaust\, Hitler’s program to commit genocide against those he deemed unworthy\, especially Europe’s Jews. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, April 2 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 27. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. Groups that were arrested and detained included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. Visitors are invited to come see this sobering exhibit\, and help our society remember those that were victims of atrocity\, prejudice\, and hate. \nThe internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar and it marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising which started on April 19\, 1943. In Hebrew\, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. SUMMARY:Full Moon Event at Crooked River Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Lighthouse Event on Tuesday\, April 23\, from 7:00-9:00 pm in Carrabelle\, FL. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the rising Pink Moon and evening sky.  \nApril’s full moon is traditionally known as the Pink Moon\, and it heralds the arrival of spring. It is called the Pink Moon because it often aligns with the blossoming of a particular wildflower indigenous to the eastern regions of North America—the Phlox subulata. This early spring bloom\, commonly known as creeping phlox or moss phlox\, also bears the charming name “moss pink.” \nVisitors can enjoy an after-hours self-guided tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit for the lighthouse’s original\, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. Visitors may also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening.  \nFor those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast\, evening tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay. Evening climbs cost $10 and climb reservations are encouraged due to limited availability. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall and children under 12 (FREE) with ticketed adults. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit to remember the Holocaust\, Hitler’s program to commit genocide against those he deemed unworthy\, especially Europe’s Jews. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, April 2 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 27. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. Groups that were arrested and detained included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. Visitors are invited to come see this sobering exhibit\, and help our society remember those that were victims of atrocity\, prejudice\, and hate. \nThe internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar and it marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising which started on April 19\, 1943. In Hebrew\, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. There is no charge to attend. \nDale Cox\, a Southern writer and historian\, is the author of more than one dozen books on Southern history and culture including one about the famous Franklin County site entitled\, “The Fort at Prospect Bluff: History of the Negro Fort on the Apalachicola River” as well as “The Battle of Natural Bridge\, Florida: The Confederate Defense of Tallahassee” about the battle near the St. Marks River. His acclaimed Civil War study – “The Battle of Marianna\, Florida” – was named best in its category by Civil War Books & Authors. Cox has won numerous awards and has been named to the prestigious Bonnie Blue Society for Southern writers.  \nThomas Becknell grew up on the plains and prairies of Wyoming and Nebraska. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and taught literary history and writing for 35 years in Minnesota. His most recent book is Enchantments of the Mississippi: A Contemplative Journey of Time and Place (2022). Thomas lives in Apalachicola with his wife\, PJ Erwin\, and their two dogs.  \nThe last program in the Pen to Paper series will be Monday\, May 13 at 2:00 pm and will feature writers\, Anthony Lee Watkins and David Adlerstein. DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting a special exhibit\, “Tate’s Hell\, the Legend\, Tate’s Hell\, the Place”. This exhibit will open on Saturday\, March 16 and run through Saturday\, April 27. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am  to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs.  \nThis Tate’s Hell exhibit will explore the many facets of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, the misadventures and fate of Cebe Tate\, and how Tate’s Hell State Forest got its name. Wildlife and landscape photos taken in Tate’s Hell by John Spohrer and Jon Johnson will be on display. This exhibit will also include the song\, The Ballad of Tate’s Hell by Will McLean and performed by Frank Lindamood and the FSU Department of Communications’ 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell”. “In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry\, through continuous occupation of the same soil. Local events can flower into legend and ballad and proverb\, and village ways can harden into custom.” Richard M.
