SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Special Services Forces at Camp Gordon Johnston
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about the Special Services Forces at Camp Gordon Johnston. This exhibit will be on display from Tuesday\, July 21 until Saturday\, August 29.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.     \nWhile Camp Gordon Johnston is best known for training infantry divisions in amphibious assault\, the camp’s mission changed in late 1943 when it became a U.S. Army Special Services Forces Training Center. Thousands of soldiers came to Carrabelle to train in highly specialized support roles that were essential to Allied success overseas. These units prepared to build\, repair\, supply\, and sustain the ports and transportation networks that kept troops and equipment moving throughout the war. \nThis special exhibit highlights many of these vital units and their unique missions\, including Port Companies\, Port Construction and Repair Groups\, Harbor Craft Companies\, Amphibious Truck Companies\, specialized Quartermaster units and other specialized units that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston before serving in Europe and the Pacific. Through photographs\, artifacts\, historical information\, and personal stories\, visitors will discover how these service members used specialized skills and equipment to support landing forces and combat operations by repairing damaged ports\, operating harbor vessels\, clearing obstructions\, transporting critical supplies\, maintaining equipment\, providing logistical support\, and protecting troops through their skilled operations. \nDuring World War II\, Camp Gordon Johnston trained approximately a quarter of a million soldiers. The skills learned on Carrabelle’s beaches and throughout the camp prepared not only combat troops but also the specialized support units whose work made every amphibious operation possible. Their contributions were indispensable to Allied victories across both the European and Pacific theaters. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. SUMMARY:Mahjong Club\, Writers Forum\, and Forestry Plant Identification at the Eastpoint Library
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) announces a month of creative\, engaging\, and relaxed programs at the Franklin County Public Libraries. All programs are free and open to the public with no library card required.  Please note: both branches will be closing at 1 pm on Wednesday\, August 26 for staff development.  \nMahjong Club meets for open play Tuesday\, August 18 from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Eastpoint Branch. All players are invited to join in the fun. \nThe Writer’s Forum meets on Wednesday\, August 19 at 1 pm at the Eastpoint Branch. Attendees are welcome to share their work\, get inspired\, and connect with fellow writers. Writers of all genres and experience levels are invited. \nA Plant Identification For Beginners program will be held Friday\, August 21 from 4-5 pm at the Eastpoint Branch\, presented by the Florida Forest Service. Participants will learn about the region’s native forests and what depends on them with area forester Genevieve Sasnett. Guests will discover host plants\, discuss plant survival tactics\, identify plants to avoid\, learn about common uses for trees\, and leave with their own herbarium created from samples that they collect. \nAlso this week at the Carrabelle Library: \nTech Help sessions will return on Tuesday\, August 18 at 11 am at the Carrabelle Branch. Patrons may receive one-on-one assistance with devices\, email\, digital resources\, and more. No registration is required; drop-ins are welcome. \nAdult Crafternoon: Puffer Fish Painting is scheduled for Thursday\, August 20\, at 2:30 pm at the Carrabelle Branch. Adults are invited to this hands-on craft workshop where participants can unleash their creativity and explore new artistic techniques. Space is limited to 12 participants\, so pre-registration is strongly recommended to reserve a spot. The program is free\, with all supplies provided. No experience is necessary—just a passion for creating. \nThese programs are supported by the Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries\, a 501(c)(3) organization. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \nThe exhibit is supported in part through the Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 grant initiative\, which helps communities commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Through this initiative\, the Duke Energy Foundation is investing in projects that inspire civic pride\, strengthen communities\, and celebrate the nation’s history.  \nThrough stories of Carrabelle’s mayors through time along with original artifacts\, large-scale historic photographs and interpretive signage\, the exhibit highlights how democracy functioned at the grassroots level and showcases civic leadership across generations. This project preserves and displays civic artifacts\, provides free access to historical education for residents and visitors\, and strengthens civic pride in Carrabelle’s role in America’s democratic journey. \nOther highlights of the exhibit include original ballot boxes\, paper ballots from 1909 and several periods of the 20th century\, 1940s municipal court log books\, city clerk journals\, and founding documents. These artifacts reveal how citizens voted\, resolved disputes\, and organized local government\, demonstrating how engaged citizens and elected officials helped shape the history of Carrabelle and Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Families and young visitors can also enjoy America250 activities\, including patriotic coloring sheets and word searches. \nHoused inside Carrabelle’s historic City Hall and using the very room where the justice of the peace\, municipal court\, city commission\, and mayors once governed\, the exhibit uses the building itself as both artifact and backdrop. This relaxing evening event offers after-hours museum visits\, gift shop browsing\, twilight tower climbs\, and the peaceful natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach as evening falls. Guests will enjoy live music from the talented Harold Boothe from 7:00-8:30 pm. Admission is FREE. Evening climbs are $6 for the public\, free for current members and free for kids 12 and under with a ticketed adult.  \nHarold Boothe will bring his signature laid-back coastal sound to the evening\, blending trop-rock\, coastal country and singer-songwriter storytelling. Influenced by the beach-bar lifestyle of the Gulf Coast\, Key West and the Caribbean\, as well as the storytelling traditions of Nashville and the South\, his music combines melodies and relatable stories with touches of country\, rock\, jazz and blues.  \nA lifelong songwriter\, Boothe draws inspiration from the people\, places and experiences around him\, from the rural South and Nashville to coastal communities and Caribbean islands. Boothe’s music is a perfect fit for a memorable evening of music and twilight views at the Crooked River Lighthouse.  \nThe Keeper’s House Museum will be open for special evening hours\, featuring the lighthouse’s original Fourth Order Fresnel lens\, constructed in Paris\, France\, in 1894. Visitors can also browse the lighthouse gift shop for unique nautical gifts and souvenirs. The Beacon Bistro will offer baked goodies\, popcorn\, and refreshments by donation. Plus guests can enjoy food and beverages from the LINK Sausages & Beer Food Truck.  Guests are encouraged to kick back\, relax on the lighthouse grounds\, and enjoy a memorable evening beneath the summer sky.  \nFor those looking for an unforgettable view\, twilight tower climbs provide a chance to experience the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast from the top. Climbers will enjoy panoramic views of St. George Sound\, Carrabelle Beach\, and the beautiful colors of twilight stretching across the horizon as dusk settles over the coast.  \nAdvance climb tickets are encouraged. Evening climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals and all climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. This unique exhibit\, in honor of America’s 250th birthday\, tells the story of Carrabelle’s history\, independence\, democratic participation\, and civic identity through artifacts\, photographs\, and stories. Visitors can explore this exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \nThe exhibit is supported in part through the Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 grant initiative\, which helps communities commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Through this initiative\, the Duke Energy Foundation is investing in projects that inspire civic pride\, strengthen communities\, and celebrate the nation’s history.  \nThrough stories of Carrabelle’s mayors through time along with original artifacts\, large-scale historic photographs and interpretive signage\, the exhibit highlights how democracy functioned at the grassroots level and showcases civic leadership across generations. This project preserves and displays civic artifacts\, provides free access to historical education for residents and visitors\, and strengthens civic pride in Carrabelle’s role in America’s democratic journey. \nOther highlights of the exhibit include original ballot boxes\, paper ballots from 1909 and several periods of the 20th century\, 1940s municipal court log books\, city clerk journals\, and founding documents. These artifacts reveal how citizens voted\, resolved disputes\, and organized local government\, demonstrating how engaged citizens and elected officials helped shape the history of Carrabelle and Florida’s Forgotten Coast. DESCRIPTION:The Country Farmer’s Market is held every 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 9:00 am-1:00 pm\, nestled at the foot of the Crooked River Lighthouse\,  1975 Hwy 98 West\, Carrabelle\, FL for a delightful showcase of local talent and treasures. Our community’s finest vendors will be there\, offering a diverse array of goodies that make perfect gifts or treats for yourself at this open-air market. \nIndulge in locally handmade jewelry\, farm-fresh produce\, freshly roasted coffee\, mouthwatering baked goods (yes\, we’re talking cinnamon rolls and artisan breads!)\, handcrafted balms\, grass fed beef\, aromatic herbs\, stunning art and photography\, handmade crafts\, and so much more. Plus\, there will be book signings\, unique t-shirts\, vegetable seeds\, and exotic starter plants to explore. \nWhile you’re here\, don’t miss out on a visit to the free Keeper’s House Museum\, where you can marvel at our brand new exhibit featuring the historic Fresnel lens. And be sure to pop into the Lighthouse Gift Shop for one-of-a-kind\, nautical-themed holiday gifts. \nFor those seeking adventure\, seize the opportunity to climb to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast for an awe-inspiring view of the Bay (small fee applies). \nMark your calendars for every 1st and 3rd Saturday (excluding holidays)\, and don’t forget about our larger spring and fall County and Flea Markets. \nNew and returning vendors are always welcome!
