SUMMARY:Twilight at the Tower & Plein Air Painting Demo
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse and the Carrabelle Artist Association will be hosting Twilight at the Tower on Sunday\, March 1\, 2026 from 4:00-7:00 pm ET in Carrabelle\, FL. This special event invites visitors to enjoy after-hours museum visits\, gift shop browsing\, a glowing bonfire\, tower climbs\, and the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach as evening falls and the moon rises. Plus guests will be treated to a plein air painting demonstration by Julie Bowman Williams\, oil & pastel artist. Admission is free and climbs are $6 for the public and free for current members and for those under 12 with a ticketed adult. Climb reservations are available in the gift shop or online at crookedriverlighthouse.com/full-moon-events/. \nJulie Bowman Williams\, artist and demonstrator will paint and comment on scene composition\, choices of colors\, and the drawing from life and photographs. Other Plein Air painters may be painting with their own composition and choice of materials. As an artist\, Julie was recently selected to be in the Chain of Parks in Tallahassee. Her artwork was used for advertising. She uses intense color using oils\, acrylics and pastels. Free Event with Snacks and Beverages. This event is a prelude to the Forgotten Coast in Plein Air event which will happen March 20-29 in Franklin and Gulf counties with a special reception in Carrabelle on Tuesday\, March 24. \nThe Keeper’s House Museum will be open for after-hours tours featuring the lighthouse’s original Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. The lighthouse gift shop will offer a variety of unique nautical gifts and souvenirs\, and the Beacon Bistro will have delicious baked goodies\, popcorn\, hot chocolate\, and s’more kits available by donation. A glowing bonfire will create a perfect atmosphere for folks to kick back\, relax and enjoy the evening. As the sky shifts from watercolor hues to deep evening blues\, visitors are welcome to bring a chair and unwind on the lighthouse grounds.  \nVisitors seeking an unforgettable experience can enjoy twilight tower climbs to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast. From the top\, climbers will be treated to panoramic views of St. George Sound\, Carrabelle Beach and the beautiful colors of the evening sky. Evening climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals and cost $6 for the public and free for current members. Climb reservations are encouraged due to limited availability. SUMMARY:2026 Apalachicola Mardi Gras Barkus Parade & Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Mystic Krewe of Salty Barkers will celebrate Mardi Gras Apalach-style on February 27-28\, 2026\, at Riverfront Park in Apalachicola\, FL. This beloved coastal tradition features a lively street festival and the 15th Annual Mardi Gras Barkus Parade\, a parade of costumed dogs and their people. Guests are invited to dive into the fun in festive costumes\, creative floats\, wagging tails\, and plenty of local flair. All sea lovers and their loyal sea pups are invited to swim by and enjoy this fintastic ocean adventure. \nThe 2026 theme is “Under the Sea.” Pups and their people will don costumes inspired by the wonders of the deep blue sea\, a magical ocean realm ruled by dogs. The streets will be swimming with majestic mer-dogs\, sea royalty\, pirate and their ships\, shimmering fish\, daring divers\, and maybe even a sea monster or two. The creativity and splashy spirit guests bring to this magical underwater spectacle will be a sight to see. \nThe festival kicks off with fun and frivolity on Friday\, February 27\, from 12 to 6 pm ET with the Fido-Do (a Salty Barker twist on a fais do-do). This old-fashioned Mardi Gras street event will feature live music and entertainment and of course delicious food and drinks. Participants are invited to bring their golf carts and decorate them for Saturday’s parade and stay for the new Sundown Celebration.  \nOn Saturday\, February 28\, the festival continues from 10:30  to 4 pm at Riverfront Park. Guests will enjoy over 40 vendors offering a variety of food\, arts\, and crafts\, live music\, a beer and wine garden with local craft brews\, and of course the Pet Parade. Additional highlights include street entertainment\, pet and family photos\, pet adoptions through the Franklin County Humane Society and animal ambassadors from the Florida Wild Mammal Association. Other non-profit exhibitors will also be present\, along with T-shirts and Mardi Gras merchandise for purchase. \nThe 15th Annual Barkus Parade\, the big splash of the weekend\, starts at 1 pm on Saturday. The parade of decorated golf carts\, boats\, floats\, and costumed walkers – both the four-legged and two-legged kind will make waves at Riverfront Park\, wind through town\, and end back at the park to continue the raucous fun. Registration for the parade is $5 for walkers\, $25 for golf carts\, and $50 for floats. Canine companions\, of course\, are free.  \nMore than just fun\, this celebration is also a fundraiser for local animal rescue organizations. The Mystic Krewe of Salty Barkers donates all proceeds to help animals in need across the Forgotten Coast. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring our African American Servicemembers
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit in recognition of Black History Month honoring  the service of African-American servicemembers in WWII. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, February 3\, 2026 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, February 28\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission.  \nAfrican Americans served in large numbers during WWII despite being denied full rights as American citizens. They served in segregated units in both the Army and the Army Air Corps\, one of the most recognizable being the Tuskegee Airmen. Many African American soldiers trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in transportation units such as Amphibious Truck Companies\, where support units often worked close to combat and came under fire. \nAt Camp Gordon Johnston\, these Amphibious Truck Companies trained in the use of the amphibious truck known as the DUKW\, using the bay and sandy beaches in Carrabelle and all along the Forgotten Coast to practice operating\, loading and unloading these truly amphibious vehicles. The Museum continues its research into the units that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in Carrabelle and served in World War II including being part of the campaign on Iwo Jima.  \nThis exhibit will share what has been uncovered about these servicemen who\, like many African Americans of the era\, served their country with honor in a still-segregated military and faced significant challenges along the way. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. This event will be open to the public from 10 am – 2 pm ET. Members of the Friends have exclusive early access starting at 9:30 am. Also new members\, renewing members\, and those donating can get a Friends tote bag. This fun celebration will offer local culture and art\, with live music from the “Ukulilies” and local artisans from the SGI Quilters and the Lanark Village Wandering Star Quilters showcasing some of their stunning local goods. This is a family friendly event and all are welcome.   \nThis annual event features delicious homemade soups\, freshly baked artisan breads and used books and DVDs. Local residents bring their delicious homemade soups from seafood bisques and gumbos to chili and Brunswick stew\, along with freshly baked breads. With dozens of soups ranging from exotic to healthy to old-fashioned\, visitors are encouraged to come early to get the best selection before they sell out.  \nThe celebration highlights local culture and artistry\, including a live performance by the “Ukulilies\,” a talented group of ukulele players and singers known for their cheerful tunes and positive vibes. Their repertoire of sing-along songs is perfect for audiences of all ages\, making it a delightful musical experience for the whole family. Adding to the day’s charm\, the SGI Quilters and Lanark Village Wandering Star Quilters will showcase their beautiful handmade creations. These talented quilters celebrate the art of quilting as both a cherished tradition and a modern craft. Many African American soldiers trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in transportation units such as Amphibious Truck Companies\, where support units often worked close to combat and came under fire. \nAt Camp Gordon Johnston\, these Amphibious Truck Companies trained in the use of the amphibious truck known as the DUKW\, using the bay and sandy beaches in Carrabelle and all along the Forgotten Coast to practice operating\, loading and unloading these truly amphibious vehicles. Tower climbs\, the Keeper’s House Museum with the 1894 Fresnel Lens\, and delicious food will be available throughout the day. Admission is free. DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is proud to present a fascinating speaker program\, “French\, Spanish and British Years: From Discovery to an Exceptionally American Florida”\, featuring Clinton Flowers\, Interpretive Aide at the Missouri State Museum. This free program will be held Saturday\, February 7\, 2026\, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm ET at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. \nFlowers will discuss the critical events and interactions among France\, Spain\, and Britain that contributed to the development of the modern State of Florida. The narrative encompasses episodes of conflict\, deception\, and strategic alliances\, while recognizing the enduring legacies of Florida—now celebrated as the “free state of sunshine!” \nThe Louisiana Purchase of 1803\, though not directly including Florida\, transformed the young nation and indirectly reshaped Florida’s role. Occurring during a period characterized by exploration\, conquest\, and expansion\, it marked a major enhancement of American power\, providing new territory\, resources\, wealth\, and international influence. Once ruled by Spain\, then Britain\, then the U.S.\, Florida’s path to statehood reveals a layered history. While many believe Spain made the first permanent settlement at St. Augustine in 1565\, the French actually established one earlier in 1562—decades before Jamestown. Divided into East and West Florida\, the region remained outside the Continental Congress\, yet was deeply entwined with America’s expansion story. \nClinton Flowers works as an Interpretive Aide at the Missouri State Museum\, a history and cultural division of Missouri State Parks\, in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. He has retired from a career as Program Manager in the Missouri Department of Economic Development. Flowers has a Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring our African American Servicemembers
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit in recognition of Black History Month honoring  the service of African-American servicemembers in WWII. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, February 3\, 2026 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, February 28\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission.  \nAfrican Americans served in large numbers during WWII despite being denied full rights as American citizens. They served in segregated units in both the Army and the Army Air Corps\, one of the most recognizable being the Tuskegee Airmen. Many African American soldiers trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in transportation units such as Amphibious Truck Companies\, where support units often worked close to combat and came under fire. \nAt Camp Gordon Johnston\, these Amphibious Truck Companies trained in the use of the amphibious truck known as the DUKW\, using the bay and sandy beaches in Carrabelle and all along the Forgotten Coast to practice operating\, loading and unloading these truly amphibious vehicles. The Museum continues its research into the units that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in Carrabelle and served in World War II including being part of the campaign on Iwo Jima.  \nThis exhibit will share what has been uncovered about these servicemen who\, like many African Americans of the era\, served their country with honor in a still-segregated military and faced significant challenges along the way. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. The campaign relied on a series of top-secret deceptions—fake units\, fabricated communications\, and the famed British Intelligence ploy known as Operation Mincemeat\, which persuaded Germany that Sicily was not the next target. It set in motion one of the largest combined operations of World War II\, involving nearly half a million Allied personnel. \nHighlights of this exhibit include a set of top-secret plans for the JOSS segment (3rd Infantry Division) amphibious landings near Licata\, Sicily\, along with details for CENT (Forty-fifth Division near Scoglitti\, Sicily) and DIME (1st  Division near Gela\, Sicily)\, the other two American landing forces. This copy of the top-secret plans was printed just 20 days before the start of Operation Husky\, which involved amphibious landing of infantry and armor as well as parachute operations by the 82nd Airborne. This event will be open to the public from 10 am – 2 pm ET. Members of the Friends have exclusive early access starting at 9:30 am. Also new members\, renewing members\, and those donating can get a Friends tote bag. This fun celebration will offer local culture and art\, with live music from the “Ukulilies” and local artisans from the SGI Quilters and the Lanark Village Wandering Star Quilters showcasing some of their stunning local goods. This is a family friendly event and all are welcome.      \nThis annual event features delicious homemade soups\, freshly baked artisan breads and used books and DVDs. Local residents bring their delicious homemade soups from seafood bisques and gumbos to chili and Brunswick stew\, along with freshly baked breads. With dozens of soups ranging from exotic to healthy to old-fashioned\, visitors are encouraged to come early to get the best selection before they sell out.  \nThe celebration highlights local culture and artistry\, including a live performance by the “Ukulilies\,” a talented group of ukulele players and singers known for their cheerful tunes and positive vibes. DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting a fascinating speaker program about the History\, Culture\, and Stories of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Florida on Saturday\, January 17\, 2026\, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm ET at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. This program will feature Misty Penton\, Bio Archeologist\, Muscogee/Creek Storyteller and Tradition Keeper\, Education Director of the Fred George Museum\, and founder of the Wildwood Preservation Society. There is no charge for this event. \nAt this session\, Misty will discuss the rich history\, culture\, and stories of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Florida\, a people whose resilience has endured despite the hardships of the Trail of Tears and centuries of efforts to erase their identity. Learn how small groups avoided removal by hiding in the swamps of North Florida\, preserving their traditions through strength and secrecy. Misty will share the enduring legacy of Ekvnv Hvtke Tvlwv (White Earth Tribal Town) located at nearby Blountstown\, FL—the only ceremonial square grounds east of the Mississippi with unbroken ceremonies since prehistoric times. Discover the sacred art of shell carving\, a tradition dating back to the Mississippian era\, and explore how generational storytelling\, oral traditions\, and sacred ceremonies continue to guide and sustain the Muscogee people today. Through Misty’s presentation\, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the enduring spirit of the Muscogee people and their unbroken connection to the land\, culture\, and ancestors. \nMisty Penton is the Tradition Keeper and Storyteller for the Muscogee Nation of Florida and serves as the Education Director for The Museum at Fred George Park and Greenway in Tallahassee\, operated by the Wildwood Preservation Society. She also works as the Museum Director/Curator for the Muscogee Nation of Florida and an Education Specialist at WFSU Public Media. Penton holds a Master of Science degree in Physical and Biological Anthropology from the University of Oregon and two Bachelor of Science degrees in Political Science and Anthropology from Florida State University. She grew up near the land that is now Leon County’s Fred George Park and Greenway and helped create a coalition to help found the new county park. \nThere is no fee for this program but donations are gladly accepted to defray costs. Our community’s finest vendors will be there\, offering a diverse array of goodies that make perfect gifts or treats for yourself at this open-air market. \nIndulge in locally handmade jewelry\, farm-fresh produce\, freshly roasted coffee\, mouthwatering baked goods (yes\, we’re talking cinnamon rolls and artisan breads!)\, handcrafted balms\, grass fed beef\, aromatic herbs\, stunning art and photography\, handmade crafts\, and so much more. Plus\, there will be book signings\, unique t-shirts\, vegetable seeds\, and exotic starter plants to explore. \nWhile you’re here\, don’t miss out on a visit to the free Keeper’s House Museum\, where you can marvel at our brand new exhibit featuring the historic Fresnel lens.
