SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, June 4 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 20.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nWhen Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 in Carrabelle\, FL\, its main purpose was to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Five members of the 818th received Bronze Stars for their actions on that day. \nThe Carrabelle Beach Assault video will be shown throughout the day running every 10 minutes. This Army training short film shows the D-Day training as it happened on Carrabelle Beach during March of 1943.  There are several well-recognized photos of the Carrabelle Beach assaults taken from this video footage\, which was filmed by the U.S. Signal Corps. The amphibious training conducted at this site was to be the last training before shipping out to England. Also during this exhibit\, there will be other displays to honor D-Day\, including the three WWII military vehicles and the replica Higgins Boat on display. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is thrilled to announce the extension of its popular exhibit\, “Tate’s Hell\, the Legend. Tate’s Hell\, the Place”. Originally scheduled to conclude on April 27\, the exhibit will now be open for visitors through June 30 due to overwhelming demand and community interest. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs. \nSince its opening on Saturday\, March 16\, the exhibit has interested audiences with its exploration of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, shedding light on the misadventures and fate of Cebe Tate\, and the intriguing origins behind the name of Tate’s Hell State Forest. Visitors have been treated to a captivating array of wildlife and landscape photography captured within Tate’s Hell by esteemed photographers John Spohrer and Jon Johnson. Their stunning images vividly depict the unique beauty and mystique of this legendary locale. \nAdditionally\, the exhibit showcases cultural treasures such as the iconic ballad\, “The Ballad of Tate’s Hell” by Will McLean\, performed by the talented Frank Lindamood. Also featured is the 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell”\, produced by the FSU Department of Communications\, offering an unique interpretation on the Tate’s Hell legend. \n“In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry\, through continuous occupation of the same soil. DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program sets sail with kick off parties at 1:00 PM on Friday\, June 7th at the Eastpoint branch and on Saturday\, June 8th at the Carrabelle branch. At the kick off parties\, participants can learn and register for summer reading events followed by an ice cream social.  \nBoth library branches will have fun activities for both kids and adults during the Summer Reading Program under the theme of “Adventure Begins At Your  Library”. Library programs are free and open to the public and participants do not need a library card to participate.  \nThe theme this year is “Adventure Begins At Your  Library” and will feature the outdoors. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, June 4 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 20.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nWhen Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 in Carrabelle\, FL\, its main purpose was to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Unleash your creativity by connecting with nature through field exploration\, writing\, or art.  It’s good for your health and well-being and it is a two way street because when people bond with the natural world through creative activities\, they care more about and protect their local environment and wild places. \nEdge of the Sea workshops take place at the FSU Coastal & Marine Laboratory in St. Teresa\, FL. They start at 5:30 PM and end at 7:30 PM (unless otherwise indicated)\, taking full advantage of daylight savings time. The cost is $15 per person\, paid at the event (cash or check). Class size is limited to 20 people. The minimum age is 7 years old. No upper limit at all! DESCRIPTION:Starting April 30 and lasting until June 1\, the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum will present a special exhibit on the most violent and costliest campaign of WWII\, the battle to take Okinawa. The battle started with the capture of the Kerama Islands by the 77th infantry Division on March 26\, 1945\, and ended 98 days later on July 2. This effort involved three marine divisions and four infantry divisions making up the Tenth Army\, which had its own tactical air force\, and was supported by naval and amphibious commands. The battle cost more lives on both sides than any other campaign in the Pacific. The taking of Okinawa provided a base from which Operation Downfall\, the invasion of the Japanese mainland\, was to be launched. Operation Downfall\, of course\, was made unnecessary by the surrender of Japan in September of 1945. Included in the exhibit will be historic photos and Marine Corps artifacts. \nThis exhibit will open Thursday\, April 30 1 at 11 am and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, June 1 at 5 pm. Originally scheduled to conclude on April 27\, the exhibit will now be open for visitors through June 30 due to overwhelming demand and community interest. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs. \nSince its opening on Saturday\, March 16\, the exhibit has interested audiences with its exploration of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, shedding light on the misadventures and fate of Cebe Tate\, and the intriguing origins behind the name of Tate’s Hell State Forest. Visitors have been treated to a captivating array of wildlife and landscape photography captured within Tate’s Hell by esteemed photographers John Spohrer and Jon Johnson. Their stunning images vividly depict the unique beauty and mystique of this legendary locale. \nAdditionally\, the exhibit showcases cultural treasures such as the iconic ballad\, “The Ballad of Tate’s Hell” by Will McLean\, performed by the talented Frank Lindamood. Also featured is the 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell”\, produced by the FSU Department of Communications\, offering an unique interpretation on the Tate’s Hell legend. \n“In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry\, through continuous occupation of the same soil. Local events can flower into legend and ballad and proverb\, and village ways can harden into custom\,” remarked Richard M.
