SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, June 4 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 20.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nWhen Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 in Carrabelle\, FL\, its main purpose was to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Five members of the 818th received Bronze Stars for their actions on that day. \nThe Carrabelle Beach Assault video will be shown throughout the day running every 10 minutes. This Army training short film shows the D-Day training as it happened on Carrabelle Beach during March of 1943.  There are several well-recognized photos of the Carrabelle Beach assaults taken from this video footage\, which was filmed by the U.S. Signal Corps. The amphibious training conducted at this site was to be the last training before shipping out to England. Also during this exhibit\, there will be other displays to honor D-Day\, including the three WWII military vehicles and the replica Higgins Boat on display. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is thrilled to announce the extension of its popular exhibit\, “Tate’s Hell\, the Legend. Tate’s Hell\, the Place”. Originally scheduled to conclude on April 27\, the exhibit will now be open for visitors through June 30 due to overwhelming demand and community interest. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs. \nSince its opening on Saturday\, March 16\, the exhibit has interested audiences with its exploration of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, shedding light on the misadventures and fate of Cebe Tate\, and the intriguing origins behind the name of Tate’s Hell State Forest. Visitors have been treated to a captivating array of wildlife and landscape photography captured within Tate’s Hell by esteemed photographers John Spohrer and Jon Johnson. Their stunning images vividly depict the unique beauty and mystique of this legendary locale. \nAdditionally\, the exhibit showcases cultural treasures such as the iconic ballad\, “The Ballad of Tate’s Hell” by Will McLean\, performed by the talented Frank Lindamood. Also featured is the 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell”\, produced by the FSU Department of Communications\, offering an unique interpretation on the Tate’s Hell legend. \n“In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry\, through continuous occupation of the same soil. Local events can flower into legend and ballad and proverb\, and village ways can harden into custom\,” remarked Richard M. Corson in American Folklore\, a sentiment that resonates deeply with the essence of this exhibit. \nThe Carrabelle History Museum invites all to explore the rich tapestry of history and folklore woven into the fabric of Carrabelle. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, June 4 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 20.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nWhen Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 in Carrabelle\, FL\, its main purpose was to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Five members of the 818th received Bronze Stars for their actions on that day. \nThe Carrabelle Beach Assault video will be shown throughout the day running every 10 minutes. This Army training short film shows the D-Day training as it happened on Carrabelle Beach during March of 1943.  There are several well-recognized photos of the Carrabelle Beach assaults taken from this video footage\, which was filmed by the U.S. Signal Corps. The amphibious training conducted at this site was to be the last training before shipping out to England. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, June 4 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 20.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nWhen Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 in Carrabelle\, FL\, its main purpose was to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Five members of the 818th received Bronze Stars for their actions on that day. \nThe Carrabelle Beach Assault video will be shown throughout the day running every 10 minutes. This Army training short film shows the D-Day training as it happened on Carrabelle Beach during March of 1943.  There are several well-recognized photos of the Carrabelle Beach assaults taken from this video footage\, which was filmed by the U.S. Signal Corps. The amphibious training conducted at this site was to be the last training before shipping out to England. Visitors have been treated to a captivating array of wildlife and landscape photography captured within Tate’s Hell by esteemed photographers John Spohrer and Jon Johnson. DESCRIPTION:Come join the FSU Coastal and Marine Lab for An Evening on the Edge of the Sea to learn about the wondrous sea life along our pristine shores and shallows. The evening kicks off with a brief overview of local ecology\, followed by a walk into the exposed tidal flats to see an array of fascinating creatures. \nParticipating in field experiences is one way in which we humans connect with the natural world. By observing the intricate relationships creatures have with one another and with the habitats that are their homes\, we increase our understanding\, appreciation\, and support of nature. Unleash your creativity by connecting with nature through field exploration\, writing\, or art.  It’s good for your health and well-being and it is a two way street because when people bond with the natural world through creative activities\, they care more about and protect their local environment and wild places. \nEdge of the Sea workshops take place at the FSU Coastal & Marine Laboratory in St. Teresa\, FL. They start at 5:30 PM and end at 7:30 PM (unless otherwise indicated)\, taking full advantage of daylight savings time. The cost is $15 per person\, paid at the event (cash or check). Class size is limited to 20 people. The minimum age is 7 years old. No upper limit at all! DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Lighthouse Event on Friday\, June 21\, from 8:00-10:00 pm in Carrabelle\, FL with live music from Kevin Andrew and the Rockulla Performers. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the rising Strawberry Moon and evening sky.  \nAttendees are in for a treat as the exceptionally talented musicians\, Kevin Andrew and the Rockulla Performers\, take center stage. The Rockulla Performers are made up of a variety of young talent that will be playing guitar and ukulele as well as singing an assortment of songs including some classic country tunes\, timeless oldies\, and more. \nVisitors can enjoy an after-hours tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit of the lighthouse’s original\, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. Visitors may also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening.  \n“June’s full Moon has traditionally been called the Strawberry Moon by Native American Algonquian tribes that live in the northeastern United States as well as the Ojibwe\, Dakota\, and Lakota peoples to mark the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered.” (Credit: Old Farmer’s Almanac)  \nFor those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast\, evening tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall and children under 12 (FREE) with ticketed adults. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, June 4 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 20.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nWhen Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 in Carrabelle\, FL\, its main purpose was to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Five members of the 818th received Bronze Stars for their actions on that day. \nThe Carrabelle Beach Assault video will be shown throughout the day running every 10 minutes. This Army training short film shows the D-Day training as it happened on Carrabelle Beach during March of 1943.  There are several well-recognized photos of the Carrabelle Beach assaults taken from this video footage\, which was filmed by the U.S. Signal Corps. The amphibious training conducted at this site was to be the last training before shipping out to England. Also during this exhibit\, there will be other displays to honor D-Day\, including the three WWII military vehicles and the replica Higgins Boat on display. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Originally scheduled to conclude on April 27\, the exhibit will now be open for visitors through June 30 due to overwhelming demand and community interest. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs. \nSince its opening on Saturday\, March 16\, the exhibit has interested audiences with its exploration of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, shedding light on the misadventures and fate of Cebe Tate\, and the intriguing origins behind the name of Tate’s Hell State Forest. Visitors have been treated to a captivating array of wildlife and landscape photography captured within Tate’s Hell by esteemed photographers John Spohrer and Jon Johnson. Their stunning images vividly depict the unique beauty and mystique of this legendary locale. \nAdditionally\, the exhibit showcases cultural treasures such as the iconic ballad\, “The Ballad of Tate’s Hell” by Will McLean\, performed by the talented Frank Lindamood. Also featured is the 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell”\, produced by the FSU Department of Communications\, offering an unique interpretation on the Tate’s Hell legend. \n“In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry\, through continuous occupation of the same soil. Local events can flower into legend and ballad and proverb\, and village ways can harden into custom\,” remarked Richard M. Corson in American Folklore\, a sentiment that resonates deeply with the essence of this exhibit. \nThe Carrabelle History Museum invites all to explore the rich tapestry of history and folklore woven into the fabric of Carrabelle.
