SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, June 4 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 20.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nWhen Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 in Carrabelle\, FL\, its main purpose was to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Five members of the 818th received Bronze Stars for their actions on that day. \nThe Carrabelle Beach Assault video will be shown throughout the day running every 10 minutes. This Army training short film shows the D-Day training as it happened on Carrabelle Beach during March of 1943.  There are several well-recognized photos of the Carrabelle Beach assaults taken from this video footage\, which was filmed by the U.S. Signal Corps. The amphibious training conducted at this site was to be the last training before shipping out to England. Also during this exhibit\, there will be other displays to honor D-Day\, including the three WWII military vehicles and the replica Higgins Boat on display. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Open to all kids 16 years old and younger. Registration is required on-site. \nEvent Details\nThe 20th annual youth fishing tournament will be held on July 20\, 2024. The C-Quarters Youth fishing tournament is a FREE event! Fishing hours 8:00am – 4:00pm\, river and bay fishing only. Register at C- Quarters Marina 501 St. James Ave. / Hwy 98\, Carrabelle\, FL. \nFriday evening at 6 pm\, prior to Saturday’s fishing day\, all entries in the tournament must attend a Fishing Clinic taught by the Dock Master at C-Quarters Marina. \nThere are eight categories of fish with three places in each category. There will be trophies awarded for each category. On Saturday morning\, the kids can fish from docks or\, if they can go out on a boat\, they are allowed to fish the Carrabelle River up to Dog Island. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, June 4 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 20.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nWhen Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 in Carrabelle\, FL\, its main purpose was to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Both library branches will have fun activities for both kids and adults during this program. The theme this year is “Adventure Begins At Your  Library” and will feature the outdoors. There will be reading logs\, prizes and incentives for all ages (including adults). DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is thrilled to continue its series of fun events with the eagerly awaited  children’s entertainer\, Mr. Richard. This special program will be held on Monday\, July 8\, at two convenient times and locations: 11:00 am at the Eastpoint Branch Library and 2:00 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. The Eastpoint Branch is located at 160 Hickory Dip Rd\, and the Carrabelle Branch at 311 St. James Avenue (Hwy 98). Library programs are free and open to the public and participants do not need a library card to participate. All ages are welcome.  \nMr. Richard will bring his original\, wacky songs to life with a special performance just for kids. Mr. Richard\, playing guitar\, mandolin\, ukulele\, and harmonica\, will entertain with lively\, kid-centric tunes about topics like the five-second rule\, the garbage man and his truck\, and enduring long adult conversations. These lively songs ensure lots of audience participation\, with plenty of opportunities to sing\, clap\, and dance along from the very first tune. The program promises to liven up the day for all who attend. \nRichard Peeples plays whimsical\, silly tunes for children and their families. He worked at Walt Disney World in Orlando\, and also spent two summers as a ranger for the National Park Service in Colorado. For five years\, Richard was a storyteller for the Orange County Florida Library. He brings all this experience to his library programs.  \nDuring the Summer Reading Program\, both library branches have fun activities for both kids and adults. DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is thrilled to continue its series of fun events with the eagerly awaited  children’s entertainer\, Mr. Richard. This special program will be held on Monday\, July 8\, at two convenient times and locations: 11:00 am at the Eastpoint Branch Library and 2:00 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. The Eastpoint Branch is located at 160 Hickory Dip Rd\, and the Carrabelle Branch at 311 St. James Avenue (Hwy 98). Library programs are free and open to the public and participants do not need a library card to participate. All ages are welcome.  \nMr. Richard will bring his original\, wacky songs to life with a special performance just for kids. Mr. Richard\, playing guitar\, mandolin\, ukulele\, and harmonica\, will entertain with lively\, kid-centric tunes about topics like the five-second rule\, the garbage man and his truck\, and enduring long adult conversations. These lively songs ensure lots of audience participation\, with plenty of opportunities to sing\, clap\, and dance along from the very first tune. The program promises to liven up the day for all who attend. \nRichard Peeples plays whimsical\, silly tunes for children and their families. He worked at Walt Disney World in Orlando\, and also spent two summers as a ranger for the National Park Service in Colorado. For five years\, Richard was a storyteller for the Orange County Florida Library. SUMMARY:An Evening on the Edge of the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Come join the FSU Coastal and Marine Lab for An Evening on the Edge of the Sea to learn about the wondrous sea life along our pristine shores and shallows. The evening kicks off with a brief overview of local ecology\, followed by a walk into the exposed tidal flats to see an array of fascinating creatures. \nParticipating in field experiences is one way in which we humans connect with the natural world. By observing the intricate relationships creatures have with one another and with the habitats that are their homes\, we increase our understanding\, appreciation\, and support of nature. Unleash your creativity by connecting with nature through field exploration\, writing\, or art.  It’s good for your health and well-being and it is a two way street because when people bond with the natural world through creative activities\, they care more about and protect their local environment and wild places. \nEdge of the Sea workshops take place at the FSU Coastal & Marine Laboratory in St. Teresa\, FL. They start at 5:30 PM and end at 7:30 PM (unless otherwise indicated)\, taking full advantage of daylight savings time. The cost is $15 per person\, paid at the event (cash or check). Class size is limited to 20 people. The minimum age is 7 years old. No upper limit at all! SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, June 4 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 20.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.   \nWhen Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 in Carrabelle\, FL\, its main purpose was to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Five members of the 818th received Bronze Stars for their actions on that day. \nThe Carrabelle Beach Assault video will be shown throughout the day running every 10 minutes. This Army training short film shows the D-Day training as it happened on Carrabelle Beach during March of 1943.  There are several well-recognized photos of the Carrabelle Beach assaults taken from this video footage\, which was filmed by the U.S. Signal Corps. The amphibious training conducted at this site was to be the last training before shipping out to England. Also during this exhibit\, there will be other displays to honor D-Day\, including the three WWII military vehicles and the replica Higgins Boat on display. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units in amphibious warfare. This training and the men who trained here would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion was the largest seaborne invasion in history and included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThis D-Day exhibit will include the personal papers and other items from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen\, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston late 1943-early 1944. The 818th deployed to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy and was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach\, June 6\, 1944. For this they received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm. Five members of the 818th received Bronze Stars for their actions on that day. \nThe Carrabelle Beach Assault video will be shown throughout the day running every 10 minutes. This Army training short film shows the D-Day training as it happened on Carrabelle Beach during March of 1943.  There are several well-recognized photos of the Carrabelle Beach assaults taken from this video footage\, which was filmed by the U.S. Signal Corps. The amphibious training conducted at this site was to be the last training before shipping out to England. DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is thrilled to announce the extension of its popular exhibit\, “Tate’s Hell\, the Legend. Tate’s Hell\, the Place”. Originally scheduled to conclude on April 27\, the exhibit will now be open for visitors through June 30 due to overwhelming demand and community interest. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs. \nSince its opening on Saturday\, March 16\, the exhibit has interested audiences with its exploration of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, shedding light on the misadventures and fate of Cebe Tate\, and the intriguing origins behind the name of Tate’s Hell State Forest. Visitors have been treated to a captivating array of wildlife and landscape photography captured within Tate’s Hell by esteemed photographers John Spohrer and Jon Johnson. Their stunning images vividly depict the unique beauty and mystique of this legendary locale. \nAdditionally\, the exhibit showcases cultural treasures such as the iconic ballad\, “The Ballad of Tate’s Hell” by Will McLean\, performed by the talented Frank Lindamood. Also featured is the 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell”\, produced by the FSU Department of Communications\, offering an unique interpretation on the Tate’s Hell legend. \n“In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry\, through continuous occupation of the same soil. Local events can flower into legend and ballad and proverb\, and village ways can harden into custom\,” remarked Richard M.
