SUMMARY:New Exhibit on “Shipwrecks of Dog Island”
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is excited to announce the grand opening of a new exhibit on “Shipwrecks of Dog Island.” This Grand Opening Celebration will start on Wednesday\, October 12 at 12 noon and run through December 10 at 6 pm. The exhibit will then become a permanent installation. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. The museum and exhibit are open Wednesdays 12-5 pm\, Thursdays thru Saturdays 10 am – 5 pm and Sundays 12 – 5 pm. \nThis exhibit will explore Dog Island’s rich maritime history\, and especially focus on those shipwrecks that resulted from the Category 5 direct hit\, the “Carrabelle Hurricane” in 1899 through amazing photographs. Dog Island was a safe harbor for European explorers\, smugglers\, fishermen and lumbermen. In 2018\, Hurricane Michael uncovered parts of two ships that were wrecked during the 1899 event. Learn why these ships were visiting Carrabelle and which of our exports they took back to Europe. \nAn original video featuring expert underwater archaeologist Chuck Meide describes the process of identifying the sunken ships. It informs visitors about what to do when they come across an artifact on public land whether that’s a piece of a shipwreck\, an arrowhead\, or a piece of pottery. This exhibit was funded in part as a heritage education project by the Florida Department of State\, Division of Historic Preservation and the State of Florida. \nThis exhibit created by curator Joan Matey is the first to be installed in the museum’s refurbished upstairs. Please note that the upstairs currently can only be accessed by stairs and is therefore temporarily not accessible to those with mobility issues. An elevator has been funded through a grant and through dedicated fundraising efforts and will be installed by next summer. A special video program will also make it possible to learn about the Shipwrecks of Dog Island exhibit from downstairs to accommodate all visitors during this transition period. \nCarrabelle History Museum is located\, one block from Carrabelle Harbor\, at 106 SE Avenue B\, Carrabelle\, FL. Funding in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. For more information\, contact 850-697-2141 or go to www.carrabellehistorymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Full Moon Climb at Crooked River Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Lighthouse Climb on Tue\, November 8\, 2022 from 6:00-8:00 pm in Carrabelle\, FL. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to see the gorgeous natural surroundings of the St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the rising Beaver Moon. \nIt is believed that November’s Full Moon is named after beavers because this is when they are very active building their dams to prepare for the cold winter season. Because beavers are mainly nocturnal\, they do much of their work under the Full Moon’s light. \nWhile at Carrabelle’s lighthouse\, guests can enjoy a visit inside the Keeper’s House Museum and browse some unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. Visitors can also enjoy the glowing fire pit (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. \nThe climb to the top of the tallest Forgotten Coast lighthouse rewards bold climbers with breathtaking views of the bay. Cost is $8 for adults and $3 for kids. All climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. Advance reservations are required for those who wish to climb the lighthouse tower during this event by calling the Lighthouse gift shop. \nA limited number of climbers (max of 7) are allowed at one time. There will be a time limit for viewing from the top. Guests who would like a more leisurely climbing experience are welcome to enjoy one of the daytime climbs available every Wednesday through Sunday. Masks are welcome but not required. \nCrooked River Lighthouse is located in Carrabelle\, just west of the Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1975 Hwy 98 W\, Carrabelle. For more information\, contact the gift shop at 850-697-2732\, carrabellelighthouse@gmail.com or https://www.crookedriverlighthouse.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring Native American Servicemen & Codetalkers
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is excited to announce a special exhibit honoring Native American Servicemen. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, November 1 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, November 26\, 2022. November is National Native American Heritage Month\, and the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum salutes their service and sacrifice. The museum and exhibit is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. The museum will be closed Thursday\, November 24 for Thanksgiving. \n“During World War I and World War II\, hundreds of American Indians joined the United States armed forces and used words from their traditional tribal languages as weapons. The United States military asked them to develop secret battle communications based on their languages—and America’s enemies never deciphered the coded messages they sent. “Code Talkers\,” as they came to be known after World War II\, are twentieth-century American Indian warriors and heroes who significantly aided the victories of the United States and its allies. \nThe Code Talkers’ role in war required intelligence and bravery. They developed and memorized a special code. They endured some of the most dangerous battles and remained calm under fire. They served proudly\, with honor and distinction. Their actions proved critical in several important campaigns\, and they are credited with saving thousands of American and allies’ lives.”\n(Source: The National Museum of the American Indian). \nVisitors are invited to come to the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum during this special exhibit and learn about the Native Americans\, including members of the Choctaw\, Navajo\, Cherokee\, Pima\, Comanche and other nations\, that served their country in World War II. Discover the story of the Code Talkers\, who used their unbreakable code based on their native tongues to help defeat the enemy. Hear the stories of the seven Medal of Honor Recipients in WWII that were Native American. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition featuring Roger Leonard
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Rio Carrabelle is excited to be presenting a remarkable art exhibition featuring the art of Roger Leonard in the historic art venue\, Rio Carrabelle in Carrabelle\, Florida. Roger’s exhibit\, primarily marine landscapes\, is realistic\, moody and stunning. This impressive exhibition is on display now and will run through February. \nRoger Leonard graduated from Ringling School of Art in Sarasota\, Florida in 1974 and has won numerous awards. He worked in commercial art for over 20 years making advertising art and illustrations as well as creating many portraits and murals. After 20 years of commercial art\, Roger turned to fine art and sought the freedom of painting only for himself. “Art for me is strictly my need to do it. I need to capture the time\, place\, feeling of being there\, of knowing my subjects intimately. I work hard and try to make it work visually. What it means\, I don’t know and I don’t care. The joy for me is the creating and the painting\, then watching and listening to those who enjoy it also. When I hear people’s comments like\, “I know that place – I can feel the heat – I can smell the rain\, the sea – I’d really like to walk there – That looks like what I feel\,” then I know they sense what I saw.” says Roger Leonard. \nRoger lived and worked in a studio/home on Dog Island for 15 years\, in a rural and isolated environment that inspired him. He now divides his time between Dog Island and his home and studio on River Road in Carrabelle. His professional affiliations include the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society\, Signature Member; Oil Painters of America; American Society of Marine Artists; and American Impressionists Society\, Inc. \nRio Carrabelle Art Gallery is open Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10 am – 3 pm at 102 St. James Avenue (US Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, Florida.
\nThis exhibit will explore Dog Island’s rich maritime history\, and especially focus on those shipwrecks that resulted from the direct hit of the “Carrabelle Hurricane” in 1899 through amazing photographs.

Rio Carrabelle is a unique non-profit art & music destination located in beautiful downtown Carrabelle. Visit riocarrabelle.com or on Facebook\, The Gallery At Rio Carrabelle\, for more information. \nThe Meet the Artist Reception has been postponed and is being rescheduled due to Hurricane Ian. Stay tuned for more information on the Meet the Artist Reception.
