SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: U.S. Women of WWII
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit on the U.S. Women of WWII.  This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, May 5 and be on display at the museum until Saturday\, May 30.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nDuring WWII\, American women played a crucial role\, serving in the war effort as members of the Women’s Army Corps (WACs)\, Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) of the U.S. Navy\, the SPARs of the United States Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (Semper Paratus\, Always Ready)\, the U. S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve (MCWR)\, and as WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots)\, as well as civilians working in war industries throughout the country. Over 350\,000 American women served in the U. S. Armed Forces during World War II\, taking on over 200 different roles. Their work filled vital positions that supported the war effort both at home and overseas and ranged from mechanics\, pilots\, and drivers to gunnery instructors\, nurses\, postal workers\, and translators. During their service\, 432 servicewomen lost their lives and 88 were taken prisoner.  \nThis exhibit will showcase the many contributions of women during WWII and explain the important roles they played in the war effort. Featured displays will include historic photos and authentic artifacts such as uniforms\, handbooks\, and even a practice aptitude test given to women applicants hoping to enlist. The exhibit will also highlight individuals like U.S. Navy Flight Nurses\, who were among the first women to arrive at battles such as Iwo Jima and Okinawa\, and will remember and honor many of the local women of Franklin County who served during World War II. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. SUMMARY:Twilight at the Tower at Crooked River Lighthouse - Blue Moon
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting Twilight at the Tower on Saturday\, May 30 from 7:00-10:00 pm ET in Carrabelle\, FL. This special event invites visitors to enjoy after-hours museum visits\, gift shop browsing\, a glowing bonfire\, tower climbs\, and the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach as evening falls and the Blue moon rises.  \nThe phrase “Blue Moon” goes back hundreds of years. One of the earliest mentions was in a pamphlet in the 1500s that joked people would believe anything their minister told them—even that the Moon was blue. The phrase was meant to describe something obviously ridiculous. Today\, we use “once in a blue moon” to describe something rare\, and in astronomy it simply means an extra full moon in a cycle\, most often the second full moon in one month. \nThe Keeper’s House Museum will be open for after-hours tours featuring the lighthouse’s original Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. The lighthouse gift shop will offer a variety of unique nautical gifts and souvenirs\, and the Beacon Bistro will have delicious baked goodies\, popcorn\, hot chocolate\, and s’more kits available by donation. A glowing bonfire will create a perfect atmosphere for folks to kick back\, relax and enjoy the evening. As the sky shifts from watercolor hues to deep evening blues\, visitors are welcome to bring a chair and unwind on the lighthouse grounds.  \nVisitors seeking an unforgettable experience can enjoy twilight tower climbs to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast. From the top\, climbers will be treated to panoramic views of St. George Sound\, Carrabelle Beach and the beautiful colors of the evening sky. Climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals. Evening climbs are $6 for the public\, free for members and free for children 12 and under with a ticketed adult. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Commemorating D-Day at Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will be on display from Tuesday\, June 2 until Saturday\, July 18.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.     \nCamp Gordon Johnston was established in 1942 in Carrabelle to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units\, in amphibious warfare. That training and the men who received it would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion\, the largest seaborne invasion in history\, included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThe exhibit will include personal papers\, historic photos\, and artifacts belonging to Capt. John E. Mellen\, generously shared by his family. Capt. Mellen commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and served with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in late 1943 and early 1944 before deploying to England in preparation for the Normandy invasion. On June 6\, 1944\, they landed on Utah Beach as part of the 1st Engineer Special Brigade\, supporting the 4th Infantry Division. For this the 818th received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm and five members received Bronze Stars.  \nAdded to the exhibit this year is the story of Victor Lucek of the 3891st Quartermaster Truck Company\, who landed with his truck on Utah Beach on June 7\, 1944\, D+1. His experiences offer another viewpoint on the huge logistical effort and bravery required during the Normandy invasion. The exhibit also features interviews with members of the 4th Infantry Division and accounts from German defenders. These\, along with other tributes to D-Day\, offer a more complete perspective on this historic event. The museum’s three WWII military vehicles will also be displayed. \nAn Army training short film\, captured by the U.S. Army Signal Corps\, documents the D-Day preparations as they happened at Camp Gordon Johnston in March 1943. This video of amphibious assault training on Carrabelle Beach will play continuously during the day. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Kingfish Shootout will be held on Saturday\, June 20\, 2026\, at C-Quarters Marina in Carrabelle\, FL.\n\nJimmie Crowder’s legacy lives on through his daughter\, Lisa Crowder\, who passed away from leukemia in 2002. In her memory\, the Crowder family is committed to supporting initiatives that will revolutionize the prevention\, diagnosis\, and treatment of all types of leukemia. In 2003\, Jimmie Crowder established the annual Kingfish Shootout Fishing Tournament to raise funds for the Leukemia Research Foundation.\nSince its inception\, the Kingfish Shootout has made a significant impact\, contributing nearly $1.6 million to the Leukemia Research Foundation. The 2025 Kingfish Shootout was another record-breaking event\, raising an impressive $146\,300 with the participation of 88 boats. We kindly request your continued support to ensure the success of this event in the future.\nTournament sponsorship and registration are available online at www.thekingfishshootout.com or by mail.\n\nOnline registration ends on Thursday\, June 18th. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Commemorating D-Day at Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will be on display from Tuesday\, June 2 until Saturday\, July 18.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.     \nCamp Gordon Johnston was established in 1942 in Carrabelle to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units\, in amphibious warfare. That training and the men who received it would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion\, the largest seaborne invasion in history\, included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThe exhibit will include personal papers\, historic photos\, and artifacts belonging to Capt. John E. Mellen\, generously shared by his family. Capt. Mellen commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and served with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in late 1943 and early 1944 before deploying to England in preparation for the Normandy invasion. On June 6\, 1944\, they landed on Utah Beach as part of the 1st Engineer Special Brigade\, supporting the 4th Infantry Division. For this the 818th received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm and five members received Bronze Stars.  \nAdded to the exhibit this year is the story of Victor Lucek of the 3891st Quartermaster Truck Company\, who landed with his truck on Utah Beach on June 7\, 1944\, D+1. His experiences offer another viewpoint on the huge logistical effort and bravery required during the Normandy invasion. The exhibit also features interviews with members of the 4th Infantry Division and accounts from German defenders. These\, along with other tributes to D-Day\, offer a more complete perspective on this historic event. The museum’s three WWII military vehicles will also be displayed. \nAn Army training short film\, captured by the U.S. Army Signal Corps\, documents the D-Day preparations as they happened at Camp Gordon Johnston in March 1943. This video of amphibious assault training on Carrabelle Beach will play continuously during the day. DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting Twilight at the Tower on Sunday\, June 28 from 7:00-10:00 pm ET in Carrabelle\, FL. This special event invites visitors to enjoy after-hours museum visits\, gift shop browsing\, a glowing bonfire\, tower climbs\, and the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach as evening falls and the Strawberry moon rises.  \nJune’s full Moon has traditionally been called the Strawberry Moon by Native American Algonquian tribes that live in the northeastern United States as well as the Ojibwe\, Dakota\, and Lakota peoples to mark the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered.” (Credit: Old Farmer’s Almanac)  \nThe Keeper’s House Museum will be open for after-hours tours featuring the lighthouse’s original Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. The lighthouse gift shop will offer a variety of unique nautical gifts and souvenirs\, and the Beacon Bistro will have delicious baked goodies\, popcorn\, hot chocolate\, and s’more kits available by donation. A glowing bonfire will create a perfect atmosphere for folks to kick back\, relax and enjoy the evening. As the sky shifts from watercolor hues to deep evening blues\, visitors are welcome to bring a chair and unwind on the lighthouse grounds.  \nVisitors seeking an unforgettable experience can enjoy twilight tower climbs to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast. From the top\, climbers will be treated to panoramic views of St. George Sound\, Carrabelle Beach and the beautiful colors of the evening sky. Climb reservations are encouraged. Evening climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals. DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will be on display from Tuesday\, June 2 until Saturday\, July 18.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.     \nCamp Gordon Johnston was established in 1942 in Carrabelle to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units\, in amphibious warfare. That training and the men who received it would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion\, the largest seaborne invasion in history\, included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThe exhibit will include personal papers\, historic photos\, and artifacts belonging to Capt. John E. Mellen\, generously shared by his family. Capt. Mellen commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and served with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in late 1943 and early 1944 before deploying to England in preparation for the Normandy invasion. On June 6\, 1944\, they landed on Utah Beach as part of the 1st Engineer Special Brigade\, supporting the 4th Infantry Division. For this the 818th received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm and five members received Bronze Stars.  \nAdded to the exhibit this year is the story of Victor Lucek of the 3891st Quartermaster Truck Company\, who landed with his truck on Utah Beach on June 7\, 1944\, D+1. His experiences offer another viewpoint on the huge logistical effort and bravery required during the Normandy invasion. The exhibit also features interviews with members of the 4th Infantry Division and accounts from German defenders. These\, along with other tributes to D-Day\, offer a more complete perspective on this historic event.
