DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on Operation Market Garden. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday\, October 1 until Saturday\, November 2. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Market Garden (September 17th – 27th\, 1944) was the attempt to establish control of the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem on the border of Germany and the Netherlands. This involved the combined efforts of the First Allied Airborne and the XXX Corps of the British 2nd Army. The battle was unsuccessful for a variety of reasons\, including the dependence on a single raised highway the ground forces had to use to link up with airborne troops (US\, British and Polish) dropped at the three bridges. \nThis exhibit presents the military commanders from both the Allied and the German forces\, and presents information of the Horsa and Waco gliders\, as well as the Douglas C47 Skytrain aircraft used to bring troops and equipment from England. \nThe battle was commemorated in “A Bridge Too Far”\, the 1977 film. “Band of Brothers”\, a miniseries from HBO in 2001\, also depicted the 101st Airborne’s part in this battle. They landed near Eindhoven and Veghel. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Military Veteran Tribute
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is proud to announce the expansion of its Military Veteran Tribute Exhibit\, which honors several local men who served in the armed forces from WWI to Vietnam. This deeply meaningful exhibit has resonated deeply with the community and the families of these veterans and will soon include a new honoree. The identity of this local veteran will be revealed at a grand reopening reception. \nThe expanded exhibit will continue to honor several other military veterans with deep ties to Carrabelle\, showcasing their stories of service and sacrifice. The reopening reception will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday\, November 3 with a special tribute to veterans past and present. The exhibit will run from Sunday\, November 3 through Saturday\, November 30\, 2024\, at the Carrabelle History Museum. Visitors are welcome on Wednesdays from 12 pm to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm\, and Sundays from 12 pm to 5 pm. Admission is free\, and donations are gratefully accepted. \nThe exhibit features a variety of fascinating artifacts generously shared by the families of these men and on loan from the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum\, offering a glimpse into their military service and lives. Tamara Allen\, Director of the Carrabelle History Museum\, expressed her appreciation\, saying\, “I’ve heard from several family members and have even had the privilege to show the exhibit privately to some. The reception this display has gotten from them and from our community as a whole has been heartfelt and positive.” \nThe museum extends a special thanks to the families of the honored veterans for sharing their stories and treasured items. Additionally\, the museum is grateful for the support of Lisa Keith-Lucas and Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum\, whose invaluable collaboration helped make the exhibit possible. It will be closed Thursday\, November 28 for Thanksgiving. \n“During World War I and World War II\, hundreds of American Indians joined the United States armed forces and used words from their traditional tribal languages as weapons. The United States military asked them to develop secret battle communications based on their languages—and America’s enemies never deciphered the coded messages they sent. “Code Talkers\,” as they came to be known after World War II\, are twentieth-century American Indian warriors and heroes who significantly aided the victories of the United States and its allies. \nThe Code Talkers’ role in war required intelligence and bravery. They developed and memorized a special code. They endured some of the most dangerous battles and remained calm under fire. They served proudly\, with honor and distinction. SUMMARY:Magical Jellyfish Lantern-Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will once again be offering one of their very popular lantern-making workshops. This one on Friday\, November 8 from 1:00-4:00 pm at the Lanark Boat Club at 2364 Hwy 98 East\, Carrabelle\, FL. Wonderful volunteer\, Lisa Keith-Lucas\, will guide attendees in making the very popular Jellyfish Lanterns! These enchanting lanterns are highly admired at Lantern Fest and are fairly easy to make. \nBasic materials\, instruction and hands on help will be provided at the workshop. Attendees are invited to bring any additional materials they may like to really personalize their creations! Cost is $10 a person to cover the cost of materials. Participants will be able to explore their creative side and personalize their lantern to make it uniquely their own. At the end of the workshop\, attendees will go home with their own lovely\, finished lantern. Participants are encouraged to bring their glowing creation to the Crooked River Lighthouse for Lantern Fest on the same day from 6-10 pm to add to the awesome display. \nSpaces are limited. This award-winning group has been a part of the Irish music scene all over the U.S. and abroad. They’ve kept a strong dedication to traditional Irish music and play Irish bouzouki\, bodhran\, uilleann pipes\, tin whistle\, flute and fiddle. They will be performing lively Irish tunes under the glow of over a hundred hanging lanterns. \nThe talented Tallahassee State College Dance Company will dazzle on the outdoor stage with their impressive choreography\, amazing talent and glowing props. For over 20 years\, TSC Dance Company has nurtured and inspired creative dancers through its admirable outreach program\, which brings performances to audiences across the state. Adding to the magic\, internationally renowned Master Zheng Player\, Dr. Haiqiong Deng\, will return to perform alongside the dancers\, showcasing her mastery of the 21-string Chinese gu-zheng (zheng)\, making for a truly enchanting experience. \nJoining Haiqiong for a special performance are three members of the FSU Chinese Music Ensemble\, Dr. Yin Yang\, Safan You and Yueyue Zhu. FSU’s Chinese Music Ensemble is one of the oldest in the States. Directed by Dr. Haiqiong Deng\, the ensemble provides a unique platform for FSU students and people from the community to play traditional and folk music from diverse regions in China. In the past two decades\, the ensemble has presented at festivals\, museums and concert halls around Florida\, and has contributed richness to Florida culture. The instruments include the 21-string zheng\, a two-string Chinese fiddle called erhu\, the Chinese transverse flute called the dizi\, and a Chinese hammered dulcimer.  \nIn addition to fabulous performances\, over a hundred colorful\, hanging lanterns will be on display throughout the grounds of the lighthouse park. SUMMARY:Full Moon Lighthouse Event 11/15
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Lighthouse Event on Friday\, November 15\, from 6:00-8:00 pm ET in Carrabelle\, FL. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the sunset and rising Beaver Moon.  \nVisitors can enjoy an after-hours tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit of the lighthouse’s original\, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. Visitors may also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening.  \nFor those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast\, evening tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay. Evening climbs cost $10 and climb reservations are strongly encouraged due to limited availability. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall and children under 12 (FREE) with ticketed adults. SUMMARY:Special Exhibits: Anniversary of Pearl Harbor & Christmas During the War
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits in the month of December. The focus of one exhibit will be on commemorating the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor and the focus of the other exhibit will be on exploring Christmas During the War. These two exhibits will open Tuesday\, December 3\, 2024 and be on display until Saturday\, January 4\, 2025.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. (Closed Wednesday\, December 25 and Wednesday\, January 1.) \nIn honor of the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor\, Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is presenting an exhibit commemorating this dark day in America’s history. World War II came home for the United States on December 7\, 1941\, when the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan attacked the US Western Fleet at the American base Pearl Harbor\, Hawaii. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy”. Learn about those that planned the attack\, the sole Japanese POW taken\, and the heroic efforts by Doris Miller of the USS West Virginia to shoot down attacking Japanese planes. This attack resulted in the declaration of war with Japan and the US entering World War II. Luckily\, the Pacific Fleet’s aircraft carriers were at sea on that day\, and escaped damage to fight later. “Remember Pearl Harbor” became the rallying cry of Americans as they enlisted by the thousands and built up the immense industrial effort needed to achieve victory in 1945. \nThe second special exhibit for this month will reflect on what Christmas was like during the war. Americans had to learn to do with less during the years they were fully engaged in fighting World War II. That had a significant impact on every aspect of American life including how Christmas was celebrated. Americans were encouraged to make their own toys and decorations\, and commercially-made gifts emphasized materials that were not needed for war\, including cloth\, paper and wood. For example the popular Lionel Train toys were converted to cardboard and people learned how to cook and bake with corn syrup once sugar became scarce. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Home for the Holidays\, Paintings of Buz Putnal
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is pleased to announce a special holiday exhibit\, “Home for the Holidays” featuring the folk art paintings of historic Carrabelle by beloved local historian\, James W. “Buz” Putnal. These paintings reflect Buz’s love for Carrabelle’s heritage\, capturing iconic scenes and memories that will resonate with locals and visitors alike.  \nThis nostalgic special exhibit offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Carrabelle’s past through Buz’s artwork. The exhibit opens Wednesday\, December 4 and will run through Sunday\, January 12\, 2025\, at the Carrabelle History Museum. There will be an opening reception on Saturday\, December 7 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Visitors are welcome on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, and donations are gratefully accepted. (Closed December 25 and January 1.)  \nBuz Putnal\, born on October 16\, 1936\, in Carrabelle\, spent his life dedicated to his community and family. He married his high school sweetheart\, Genevieve Carrol\, and together they raised four children. After a career with Gulf Oil Company and Buckeye Cellulose Corporation\, Buz dedicated his retirement years to exploring his passions in painting\, woodworking\, historical preservation and his family. Buz also served his community as a City Commissioner and Mayor of Carrabelle.  \n“Home for the Holidays” features oil paintings that celebrate the scenic charm and historic character of Carrabelle in Buz’s folk art style. Visitors will be able to enjoy an intimate look at his depictions of the town’s landmarks and landscapes\, as Buz saw them through his eyes and brushstrokes. His book\, Echoes of Carrabelle\, further preserves Carrabelle’s heritage\, offering anecdotes and insights into the community’s unique stories. \nCommunity members and visitors are invited to celebrate the holiday season and enjoy the legacy of Buz Putnal through his artwork—a tribute to Carrabelle and a reflection of his lifelong devotion to his family\, community\, and the history of this beloved coastal town. \nThe Carrabelle History Museum is located at 106 SE Avenue B\, in historic downtown Carrabelle\, FL.
