SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Special Services Forces at Camp Gordon Johnston
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about the Special Services Forces at Camp Gordon Johnston. This exhibit will be on display from Tuesday\, July 21 until Saturday\, August 29.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.     \nWhile Camp Gordon Johnston is best known for training infantry divisions in amphibious assault\, the camp’s mission changed in late 1943 when it became a U.S. Army Special Services Forces Training Center. Thousands of soldiers came to Carrabelle to train in highly specialized support roles that were essential to Allied success overseas. These units prepared to build\, repair\, supply\, and sustain the ports and transportation networks that kept troops and equipment moving throughout the war. \nThis special exhibit highlights many of these vital units and their unique missions\, including Port Companies\, Port Construction and Repair Groups\, Harbor Craft Companies\, Amphibious Truck Companies\, specialized Quartermaster units and other specialized units that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston before serving in Europe and the Pacific. Through photographs\, artifacts\, historical information\, and personal stories\, visitors will discover how these service members used specialized skills and equipment to support landing forces and combat operations by repairing damaged ports\, operating harbor vessels\, clearing obstructions\, transporting critical supplies\, maintaining equipment\, providing logistical support\, and protecting troops through their skilled operations. \nDuring World War II\, Camp Gordon Johnston trained approximately a quarter of a million soldiers. The skills learned on Carrabelle’s beaches and throughout the camp prepared not only combat troops but also the specialized support units whose work made every amphibious operation possible. Their contributions were indispensable to Allied victories across both the European and Pacific theaters. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) announces a month of creative\, engaging\, and relaxed programs at the Franklin County Public Libraries. All programs are free and open to the public with no library card required. Please note: both branches will be closing at 1 pm on Wednesday\, August 26 for staff development.  \nNovels & Nibbles: Book Club will meet on Tuesday\, August 11 from 12–1:30 pm at the Eastpoint Branch to discuss the month’s selection\, The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. Light refreshments will be served.  \nMahjong Club meets for open play Tuesday\, August 11 from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Eastpoint Branch. All players are invited to join in the fun. \n  \n   \nAdult Crafternoon: Make Up Crafts will be offered on Thursday\, August 13 at 2:30 pm at the Eastpoint Branch. This exhibit will officially open on Saturday\, July 4  and be on display until September 30\, with sneak preview opportunities available on July 2 and 3. This unique exhibit\, in honor of America’s 250th birthday\, tells the story of Carrabelle’s history\, independence\, democratic participation\, and civic identity through artifacts\, photographs\, and stories. Visitors can explore this exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \nThe exhibit is supported in part through the Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 grant initiative\, which helps communities commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Through this initiative\, the Duke Energy Foundation is investing in projects that inspire civic pride\, strengthen communities\, and celebrate the nation’s history.  \nThrough stories of Carrabelle’s mayors through time along with original artifacts\, large-scale historic photographs and interpretive signage\, the exhibit highlights how democracy functioned at the grassroots level and showcases civic leadership across generations. This project preserves and displays civic artifacts\, provides free access to historical education for residents and visitors\, and strengthens civic pride in Carrabelle’s role in America’s democratic journey. \nOther highlights of the exhibit include original ballot boxes\, paper ballots from 1909 and several periods of the 20th century\, 1940s municipal court log books\, city clerk journals\, and founding documents. These artifacts reveal how citizens voted\, resolved disputes\, and organized local government\, demonstrating how engaged citizens and elected officials helped shape the history of Carrabelle and Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Families and young visitors can also enjoy America250 activities\, including patriotic coloring sheets and word searches. \nHoused inside Carrabelle’s historic City Hall and using the very room where the justice of the peace\, municipal court\, city commission\, and mayors once governed\, the exhibit uses the building itself as both artifact and backdrop. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) announces a month of creative\, engaging\, and relaxed programs at the Franklin County Public Libraries. All programs are free and open to the public with no library card required.  Please note: both branches will be closing at 1 pm on Wednesday\, August 26 for staff development.  \nMahjong Club meets for open play Tuesday\, August 18 from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Eastpoint Branch. All players are invited to join in the fun. \nThe Writer’s Forum meets on Wednesday\, August 19 at 1 pm at the Eastpoint Branch. Attendees are welcome to share their work\, get inspired\, and connect with fellow writers. Writers of all genres and experience levels are invited. \nA Plant Identification For Beginners program will be held Friday\, August 21 from 4-5 pm at the Eastpoint Branch\, presented by the Florida Forest Service. Participants will learn about the region’s native forests and what depends on them with area forester Genevieve Sasnett. Guests will discover host plants\, discuss plant survival tactics\, identify plants to avoid\, learn about common uses for trees\, and leave with their own herbarium created from samples that they collect. \nAlso this week at the Carrabelle Library: \nTech Help sessions will return on Tuesday\, August 18 at 11 am at the Carrabelle Branch. Patrons may receive one-on-one assistance with devices\, email\, digital resources\, and more. No registration is required; drop-ins are welcome. \nAdult Crafternoon: Puffer Fish Painting is scheduled for Thursday\, August 20\, at 2:30 pm at the Carrabelle Branch. Adults are invited to this hands-on craft workshop where participants can unleash their creativity and explore new artistic techniques. Visitors can explore this exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \nThe exhibit is supported in part through the Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 grant initiative\, which helps communities commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Through this initiative\, the Duke Energy Foundation is investing in projects that inspire civic pride\, strengthen communities\, and celebrate the nation’s history.  \nThrough stories of Carrabelle’s mayors through time along with original artifacts\, large-scale historic photographs and interpretive signage\, the exhibit highlights how democracy functioned at the grassroots level and showcases civic leadership across generations. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Special Services Forces at Camp Gordon Johnston
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about the Special Services Forces at Camp Gordon Johnston. This exhibit will be on display from Tuesday\, July 21 until Saturday\, August 29.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted.     \nWhile Camp Gordon Johnston is best known for training infantry divisions in amphibious assault\, the camp’s mission changed in late 1943 when it became a U.S. Army Special Services Forces Training Center. Thousands of soldiers came to Carrabelle to train in highly specialized support roles that were essential to Allied success overseas. These units prepared to build\, repair\, supply\, and sustain the ports and transportation networks that kept troops and equipment moving throughout the war. \nThis special exhibit highlights many of these vital units and their unique missions\, including Port Companies\, Port Construction and Repair Groups\, Harbor Craft Companies\, Amphibious Truck Companies\, specialized Quartermaster units and other specialized units that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston before serving in Europe and the Pacific. Through photographs\, artifacts\, historical information\, and personal stories\, visitors will discover how these service members used specialized skills and equipment to support landing forces and combat operations by repairing damaged ports\, operating harbor vessels\, clearing obstructions\, transporting critical supplies\, maintaining equipment\, providing logistical support\, and protecting troops through their skilled operations. \nDuring World War II\, Camp Gordon Johnston trained approximately a quarter of a million soldiers. The skills learned on Carrabelle’s beaches and throughout the camp prepared not only combat troops but also the specialized support units whose work made every amphibious operation possible. Their contributions were indispensable to Allied victories across both the European and Pacific theaters. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. This unique exhibit\, in honor of America’s 250th birthday\, tells the story of Carrabelle’s history\, independence\, democratic participation\, and civic identity through artifacts\, photographs\, and stories. Visitors can explore this exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \nThe exhibit is supported in part through the Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 grant initiative\, which helps communities commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Through this initiative\, the Duke Energy Foundation is investing in projects that inspire civic pride\, strengthen communities\, and celebrate the nation’s history.  \nThrough stories of Carrabelle’s mayors through time along with original artifacts\, large-scale historic photographs and interpretive signage\, the exhibit highlights how democracy functioned at the grassroots level and showcases civic leadership across generations. Our community’s finest vendors will be there\, offering a diverse array of goodies that make perfect gifts or treats for yourself at this open-air market. \nIndulge in locally handmade jewelry\, farm-fresh produce\, freshly roasted coffee\, mouthwatering baked goods (yes\, we’re talking cinnamon rolls and artisan breads!)\, handcrafted balms\, grass fed beef\, aromatic herbs\, stunning art and photography\, handmade crafts\, and so much more. Plus\, there will be book signings\, unique t-shirts\, vegetable seeds\, and exotic starter plants to explore. \nWhile you’re here\, don’t miss out on a visit to the free Keeper’s House Museum\, where you can marvel at our brand new exhibit featuring the historic Fresnel lens. And be sure to pop into the Lighthouse Gift Shop for one-of-a-kind\, nautical-themed holiday gifts. \nFor those seeking adventure\, seize the opportunity to climb to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast for an awe-inspiring view of the Bay (small fee applies). \nMark your calendars for every 1st and 3rd Saturday (excluding holidays)\, and don’t forget about our larger spring and fall County and Flea Markets. \nNew and returning vendors are always welcome! Our community’s finest vendors will be there\, offering a diverse array of goodies that make perfect gifts or treats for yourself at this open-air market. \nIndulge in locally handmade jewelry\, farm-fresh produce\, freshly roasted coffee\, mouthwatering baked goods (yes\, we’re talking cinnamon rolls and artisan breads!)\, handcrafted balms\, grass fed beef\, aromatic herbs\, stunning art and photography\, handmade crafts\, and so much more. Plus\, there will be book signings\, unique t-shirts\, vegetable seeds\, and exotic starter plants to explore. \nWhile you’re here\, don’t miss out on a visit to the free Keeper’s House Museum\, where you can marvel at our brand new exhibit featuring the historic Fresnel lens. And be sure to pop into the Lighthouse Gift Shop for one-of-a-kind\, nautical-themed holiday gifts. \nFor those seeking adventure\, seize the opportunity to climb to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast for an awe-inspiring view of the Bay (small fee applies). \nMark your calendars for every 1st and 3rd Saturday (excluding holidays)\, and don’t forget about our larger spring and fall County and Flea Markets. \nNew and returning vendors are always welcome!
