SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Battle of Iwo Jima
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about the Battle of Iwo Jima. This exhibit will open Friday\, March 6 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, March 28\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission.  \n  \nThe Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the most important and hardest-fought amphibious battles of World War II. From February 19 to March 26\, 1945\, American forces attacked the small\, heavily defended island to secure its airfields and use them to support bombing missions against Japan. Marines from the 3rd\, 4th\, and 5th Marine Divisions landed on narrow beaches under heavy artillery\, mortar\, and small arms fire and quickly faced fierce resistance. Japanese troops were dug into bunkers\, caves\, and tunnels\, making every step forward dangerous. The battle was one of the bloodiest in the Pacific\, with nearly 7\,000 Americans killed and many more wounded.  After weeks of hard combat\, the island was secured and the famous flag raising on Mount Suribachi became a powerful symbol of courage and sacrifice. \n  \nAlthough Marines led the assault\, many Army and Navy units played key support roles. The U.S. Army’s 147th Infantry Regiment helped clear the island\, and Navy Seabees repaired airfields so planes could quickly use them. Among them were several Amphibious Truck Companies—the 471st\, 473rd\, and 476th— that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston. Landing under fire\, they moved supplies\, carried ammunition\, rescued stranded equipment\, and evacuated wounded soldiers from the beaches using DUKW amphibious vehicles. These units served alongside the 4th Marine Division and took part in heavy fighting. Throughout the month\, the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will have a special exhibit commemorating the anniversary of the Iwo Jima Battle. Displays will include photos\, video\, and artifacts including some from the Marine Corps. \n  \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:2026 Forgotten Coast en Plein Air
DESCRIPTION:Beaches\, lighthouses\, bayous\, pine forests\, palm trees\, fishing villages and vessels\, and historic small-town Southern architecture: The Forgotten Coast en Plein Air offers a dramatic array of inspiring settings. Located along a 100-mile stretch of scenic coastal towns on the Gulf in North Florida\, this 10-day invitational event takes place from March 20–29\, 2026\, bringing world-class plein air artists together to paint across eight Forgotten Coast communities. Now in its 21st year\, the event offers residents and visitors an interactive arts experience and kicks off with the popular Quickdraw paintout\, where artists capture the beauty of the region in real time. The Quickdraw will be judged by celebrated contemporary impressionist Lori Putnam\, an award-winning oil painter and Master Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America (OPAM) whose expressive works\, which are shaped by painting and teaching in more than 30 countries\, are exhibited and collected worldwide.  \nActivities take place every day throughout the event and include painting demonstrations\, lunch and learns\, wetroom\, gala\, painting stations with plein air artists\, Student Art Day\, and a plein air gospel service on the waterfront. Student Art Day\, a cherished highlight of the event since 2007\, pairs selected Gulf and Franklin County students one-on-one with artists to create plein air paintings. The students’ work will be exhibited March 25–29 at The Joe Center for the Arts in Port St. Joe. All demonstrations and receptions are free and open to the public. Collector packages include an art credit for painting purchases and admittance to additional events. \nInvited artists from around the world include Olena Babak\, Suzie Baker\, Greg Barnes\, Beth Bathe\, Carla Bosch\, Lon Brauer\, Cindy Briggs\, Charles Dickinson\, Mark Fehlman\, Joe Gyurcsak\, Michelle Held\, Tim Horn\, Kathleen B. Hudson\, Vicki Norman\, Jeremy Sams\, Manon Sander\, Mark Shasha\, Richie Vios\, and Steven S. Walker. Florida’s Finest Plein Air Ambassadors\, who share their experience through painting stations\, include Nancy Nowak\, Lizzie Hunter\, Monica Meerwarth Fernsell\, and Betty Wentworth.  \nVolunteers\, collectors\, and art lovers become part of a remarkable celebration of creativity that helps preserve the region’s culture\, history\, and natural beauty. As artists paint along this beautiful coast and volunteers bring the event to life\, its impact is felt throughout the Forgotten Coast communities—touching residents\, visitors\, and inspiring both young artists and the young-at-heart. \nThe Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition (FCCC)\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization\, works to enrich the communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast—from Alligator Point to Mexico Beach—through cultural activities that highlight the region’s unique arts and heritage including its signature event\, Forgotten Coast en Plein Air\, America’s Great Paint Out. For details\, visit www.forgottencoastenpleinair.com. Funded in part by Florida Arts & Culture\, Duke Energy Foundation and the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. \n \n

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring our African American Servicemembers
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit in recognition of Black History Month honoring  the service of African-American servicemembers in WWII. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, February 3\, 2026 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, February 28\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission.  \nAfrican Americans served in large numbers during WWII despite being denied full rights as American citizens. They served in segregated units in both the Army and the Army Air Corps\, one of the most recognizable being the Tuskegee Airmen. Many African American soldiers trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in transportation units such as Amphibious Truck Companies\, where support units often worked close to combat and came under fire. \nAt Camp Gordon Johnston\, these Amphibious Truck Companies trained in the use of the amphibious truck known as the DUKW\, using the bay and sandy beaches in Carrabelle and all along the Forgotten Coast to practice operating\, loading and unloading these truly amphibious vehicles. The Museum continues its research into the units that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in Carrabelle and served in World War II including being part of the campaign on Iwo Jima.  \nThis exhibit will share what has been uncovered about these servicemen who\, like many African Americans of the era\, served their country with honor in a still-segregated military and faced significant challenges along the way. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:French\, Spanish & British Years: From Discovery to an Exceptionally American Florida: History Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is proud to present a fascinating speaker program\, “French\, Spanish and British Years: From Discovery to an Exceptionally American Florida”\, featuring Clinton Flowers\, Interpretive Aide at the Missouri State Museum. This free program will be held Saturday\, February 7\, 2026\, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm ET at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. \nFlowers will discuss the critical events and interactions among France\, Spain\, and Britain that contributed to the development of the modern State of Florida. The narrative encompasses episodes of conflict\, deception\, and strategic alliances\, while recognizing the enduring legacies of Florida—now celebrated as the “free state of sunshine!” \nThe Louisiana Purchase of 1803\, though not directly including Florida\, transformed the young nation and indirectly reshaped Florida’s role. Occurring during a period characterized by exploration\, conquest\, and expansion\, it marked a major enhancement of American power\, providing new territory\, resources\, wealth\, and international influence. Once ruled by Spain\, then Britain\, then the U.S.\, Florida’s path to statehood reveals a layered history. While many believe Spain made the first permanent settlement at St. Augustine in 1565\, the French actually established one earlier in 1562—decades before Jamestown. Divided into East and West Florida\, the region remained outside the Continental Congress\, yet was deeply entwined with America’s expansion story. \nClinton Flowers works as an Interpretive Aide at the Missouri State Museum\, a history and cultural division of Missouri State Parks\, in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. He has retired from a career as Program Manager in the Missouri Department of Economic Development. Flowers has a Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. As a certified Interpretive Aide\, he provides guided tours and has developed history programs about our nation’s westward expansion\, Lewis and Clark\, the steamboat industry\, and the Louisiana Purchase. In addition\, he has been a long-time visitor to Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Flowers brings both expertise and personal passion to this talk. \nThere is no fee for this program but donations are welcome. Sponsored by C-Quarters Marina and Shaun Donahoe Realty. For more information\, visit www.carrabellehistorymuseum.org or contact carrabellehistorymuseum@gmail.com  or 850-697-2141. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.
