SUMMARY:Special Exhibit on the End of World War II
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle will present a special exhibit on the end of World War II. This exhibit opens Tuesday\, July 15 and will be on display until Saturday\, August 30. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. Admission is free\, though donations are welcome. \nOn May 7\, 1945 Karl Donitz\, a naval admiral\, ardent Nazi\, and Hitler’s successor\, agreed to the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany’s armed forces to take effect the next day. The document of surrender was signed that day at Reims\, in northeastern France by General Alfred Jodl. On May 8\, people filled the streets in celebration and this day is known as Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day). \nOn August 14\, 1945\, the Japanese surrendered without qualifications to the U.S. and preparations began for an official surrender and the end of World War II. Earlier that month an atomic bomb had been dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and then Nagasaki. On September 2\, the formal surrender documents were signed on the decks of the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This day is celebrated as Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) in the United States. \nThis special exhibit commemorates the events that brought World War II to an end. It features a collection of artifacts related to the surrender\, including souvenirs from Japan\, photographs of post-war Japan\, and more. Highlights of the exhibit also include documents from the Nuremberg trials\, such as a vintage copy of Hitler’s will as well as occupation-era souvenirs from Germany and Japan\, and striking images of post-war Germany. Items that relate to the preparation for the invasion of Japan (thankfully unnecessary) will also be on display. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:Coastal Twilight at the Tower at Crooked River Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting Coastal Twilight at the Tower on Friday\, August 8 from 8:00-10:00 pm ET in Carrabelle\, FL. This special after-hours event invites visitors to enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach as the golden sun sets below the horizon and the Sturgeon Moon rises. \nThe moon in August is called the Sturgeon Moon because of the giant lake sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain; this native freshwater fish was readily caught during this part of summer and an important food staple for Native Americans who lived in the region. (Credit: Almanac.com) \nVisitors can tour the Keeper’s House Museum and see the original\, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. The lighthouse gift shop will also be offering unique nautical gifts and souvenirs. Guests are welcome to bring a chair and relax as the color of the sky goes from watercolor hues to evening blues and the first evening star appears. \nThose who wish to climb to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast can take part in twilight tower climbs. From the top\, climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views\, the colors of the sunset\, and the glow of the rising moon. Evening climbs cost $10 and are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Due to limited availability\, climb reservations are strongly encouraged. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. Children under 12 climb free with ticketed adults. Advance tickets can be purchased in the lighthouse gift shop or online at https://www.crookedriverlighthouse.com/full-moon-events/ \nCrooked River Lighthouse is located in Carrabelle\, just west of the Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1975 Hwy 98 W\, Carrabelle.
